Prayers for the family of retired EMT/Firefighter Jim Killion who has passed away.

Jim served many years in our area as an EMT/Firefighter as well as serving in the role of EMS director and an educator. Not only did Jim help those in need, but also helped educate and mentor many of the responders over the years. Jim will be sorely missed by those that knew him both personally and professionally.

Bell County EMS would like to take a moment to share some information with all of our followers.

From time to time we are contacted and asked about what our service will honor in terms of documents for respecting a patient's wishes for end-of-life care.

We would like to take this opportunity to give out information regarding what we are allowed to accept as a form of acceptable documentation for respecting a patient's wishes. In Kentucky, there are only 2 documents that an EMS provider can honor when someone does not wish to be resuscitated foreseeing that they pass away. A patient is required to have either a KY EMS DNR completed or the KY MOST Form. These forms must be completed correctly and physically available at anytime a request is made to provide treatment to a patient.

We have seen in the past where people have a living will or another legal document that they have had completed by an attorney stating their wishes. KY EMS services are not allowed to accept these forms of documentation to honor someone's wishes regarding end-of-life care. We must have one of the two allowable documents available to honor a patient's wishes.

Below are links to these documents that anyone can access and print at any time for any needs.

We hope to use this as an opportunity to assist in educating those in our communities and are available to answer questions if needed.

As we close the week out all of this week nationally has been designated as a week to recognize and show appreciation towards EMS providers. Since EMS week 2020, EMS has faced some new challenges during the COVID pandemic, as well as losing one of our own senior paramedics, Ken Ely. To say that each day is a new day not knowing what one may face, in the field of EMS, is an understatement. Bell County EMS would like to recognize not only our department members but also all EMS personnel for the selfless duty to act in a time of someone else's emergency! We thank all of our EMS responders for their hard work that they place into the career they have chosen to work in. From the countless hours of training to missing important family events, etc we take this time each year to say THANK YOU!

Bell County EMS takes this week to also dedicate to remember the life of Ken Ely, paramedic. A true example of one who put his heart into his career for his patients every day. Let's continue this year to better our selves to help others through training and support of each other, we become stronger every day.

Happy EMS Week from Bell County EMS.

We would like to thank everyone for their words of support shown to the first responder community and Bell County EMS during this time of loss.

Ken Ely was a loyal, valued, and dedicated paramedic to this department for many years. Ken was loved by all and his company was always welcome. A true light and friend to his fellow first responders, co-workers, and community. Ken was more than eager to learn at any available opportunity, willing to help at any time in any situation, and was able to compose the utmost professionalism at times most would seem impossible. With constant evolving changes in medicine, Ken was always a true example of a lifelong learner to always keep up with medicine and its place in his advanced level of practice, each and every day.

Ken was known for a contagious smile that was shown in even the worst of times and some of the hardest of situations. If ever a lesson is to be learned, which is of many, it is of his love for helping others in need and his fellow responders around him. Ken was a huge asset to Bell County EMS and the agencies surrounding and will be greatly missed in the days to come!

Continue to remember the first responder community and Ken's family in your prayers.
