Behind the Smoke.

A BBQ like this doesn’t happen in 35 minutes.

It takes hours of preparation, hard work, teamwork, and a whole lot of people willing to give their time to make it happen.

These photos captured some of what Saturday was really about.

Our volunteers were up early, working the smokers, preparing food, setting up, serving our community, keeping things moving, and staying until the very last thing was cleaned up.

And then there was our community.

People showed up hungry, but they also showed up to support their volunteer fire department. That support means more than we can put into words.

We also want to give a huge thank you to our friend Mark Tilley who spent the day taking these photos for us. Having someone there to capture the people, the work, the smiles, the smoke, and everything in between gives us memories we’ll be able to look back on for years to come.

We Need You.

Every Monday evening, the bay doors open, the trucks are checked, and our volunteers come together to train.

Training is more than learning how to fight fires. It’s about building confidence, developing skills, and making sure we’re ready when our community needs us most.

At Double Creek Volunteer Fire Department, every member started somewhere. Some arrived with experience. Many did not. What they all had in common was a willingness to serve.

We honestly don’t know how to say thank you enough.

Yesterday was an incredible reminder of what happens when a community comes together behind its volunteer fire department.

Our Annual Drive-Thru BBQ broke our previous record, selling out in just 35 minutes. To 44 cars.

To everyone who came through, supported us, encouraged us, shared our posts, invited your friends, and simply believed in what we’re trying to do here at Double Creek…

THANK YOU.

And to everyone who came hoping to get some BBQ but we had to turn you away because we sold out…

We are truly, genuinely sorry.

We know some of you drove out specifically for this BBQ. We know some of you waited in line. We know it is disappointing to finally get to the front and hear that we’re out.

That was never our intention.

We planned for 200 pounds, and yesterday our community reminded us just how hungry it was for some Double Creek BBQ.

We are incredibly grateful for the support, but we’re also taking yesterday’s turnout seriously. We heard you.

To the 44 cars that got through before we sold out…

We hope you enjoyed every bite.

To our volunteers…

Go get some rest.

Everyone at Double Creek is absolutely exhausted. But it’s the kind of exhausted that comes with knowing you gave everything you had for something bigger than yourself.

And to our community:

Thank you for showing up for us.

This fire department belongs to this community, and you reminded us exactly why we keep doing what we do.

Now we’re going to take a little time to reset, clean up, catch our breath, and get some sleep.

1:30 am update.

While most of the community is asleep, the late night crew at Double Creek is still working.

The fire is burning.
The wood is feeding the smokers.
The smoke is rolling across the station.

And that pork is getting the time and attention it deserves.

This isn’t fast food. This is barbecue.

Tomorrow, we’re bringing 200 pounds of wood-smoked, hand-pulled pork BBQ to our community, prepared the traditional way.

Every community has those people who seem to be woven into the fabric of the place.

For our community, Wendy and the team at Cornerstone Market are those people.

Cornerstone Market isn’t just a store you stop by. It’s a place where people know you, where familiar faces greet you, and where you can feel the connection that makes a small community special.

Wendy and her staff have consistently supported Double Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the people around them. They believe in this community, they show up for it, and they have earned the love and respect of so many people who call this area home.

That kind of support doesn’t go unnoticed.
