The Pinole Police Employees Association would like to echo those words of Brian Marvel regarding the death of George Floyd. We also echo Brian's sentiments in condemning the incident. We are firm believers in the public's First Amendment rights, but encourage this to be done by peaceful means. Lawlessness and violence is never justified. We are committed to the safety of those members of our community and will strive to ensure that everybody stays safe.

Statement From PORAC On The Death Of Mr. George Floyd

SACRAMENTO, CA – The loss of life is always tragic, and the incident in Minneapolis has damaged the trust in our nation’s law enforcement agencies. The role of peace officers is to protect and serve the citizens of their community. Sadly, what we saw in the video was a man in distress crying for help. Mr. George Floyd did not need to die.

As peace officers, we are held to a higher standard, and rightfully so. This incident is not consistent with the missions and goals of our profession. Unfortunately, the act of these officers reverberates throughout the entire law enforcement community. We were all sicked by what we saw.

We understand the frustration and anger after an incident of this magnitude, but we implore that community members gather in peaceful protests and denounce the destruction of private property and local businesses.
PORAC President Brian Marvel states that “We have an opportunity to take this negative tragedy and bring about a positive discussion regarding the need for a national standard on use of force, as well as minimum training and recruitment standards. PORAC has been an advocate of this and has carried this message to Washington D.C. for several years.”
PORAC offers its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd.

“We rush into burning fires or deal with the worst injuries — that’s our job. . . . But we’re also human, and sometimes our brains can’t compute the horrible things we see.”

Our thought and prayers go with the family of Tara O'Sullivan and with the members of the Sacramento Police department and community.

It is with a broken heart that we have to share with all of you that earlier today we lost one of our own. While on a call for service in North Sacramento, Officer Tara O’Sullivan was shot and killed. She gave her young life while protecting our community.

We are devastated tonight. There are no words to convey the depth of the sadness we feel, or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer. The men and women of our police department will continue to do our jobs to protect our community, and we will draw strength from the courage of Tara.

Our hearts are with Tara’s family, whose pain can hardly be imagined. Please hold her family in your thoughts and prayers.
