Dear Fellow Veterans,
Some chapters of military service are rarely discussed, but they deserve to be remembered. I want to share information about the Atomic Veterans Service Certificate, administered by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
This certificate recognizes qualifying veterans whose military service involved exposure, or potential exposure, to radiation associated with nuclear weapons activities. Next of kin may also request recognition for an eligible deceased veteran.
DTRA identifies eligible groups that include:
On-site participants in U.S. nuclear weapons testing from 1945–1992.
Occupation forces stationed within 10 miles of Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
Prisoners of war held within 75 miles of either city.
Prisoners of war repatriated through Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
If this may apply to you or a family member, please review DTRA’s eligibility information and application instructions:

The certificate honors qualifying service. It does not establish eligibility for VA benefits or guarantee compensation.
Please share this email with veterans, families, and your veteran organizations. Even if you do not qualify, you may know someone whose service deserves this recognition.
Thank you for your service—and for helping us connect fellow veterans with resources and recognition. Please share with others.
