Maintenance work is expected to take place over the coming weeks. Visitors can still enjoy other areas of Oso Flaco Lake; however, access to the beach overlook is currently unavailable.

Planning to spend the Fourth of July at Oceano Dunes/Pismo State Beach? Avoid the early morning traffic. Avoid the stress. Avoid the rush. And get your Day Use Vehicle pass early. For the first time, Day Use passes will be available for advance purchase beginning Tuesday, June 24, at 8:00 AM.

Passes are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. No discount or annual passes are accepted for the presale.

Reminder: The Oceano Dunes District is celebrating California State Parks Week with the 3rd Annual Pismo State Beach Sandcastle Competition on Saturday, June 13!

While team registration is now closed, everyone is welcome to come cheer on the builders and watch some incredible sand creations take shape. These teams will be sand building: 9:00 AM and Noon before awards are announced at 12:30 PM.

Bring your family, bring your friends, and come celebrate California State Parks Week with us. Enjoy a morning of creativity, community, and outdoor fun at Pismo State Beach. We can't wait to see you there.

Thank You, Hancock College Climate Action Interns

The Oceano Dunes District would like to extend a sincere thank you to Andrew Watanabe and Atley Termeer for their service through the College Corps program at Alan Hancock College.

Throughout their internship, Andrew and Atley became valued members of the interpretation team, assisting visitors at our Visitor Center, supporting educational programs, helping with special projects, and always being willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication made a meaningful impact on our staff and the many visitors who come to enjoy and learn about our parks.

The College Corps program provides college students with hands-on experience in conservation, community engagement, and public service while supporting local organizations and communities.

Thank you, Andrew and Atley, for your hard work, positive attitudes, and contributions to the Oceano Dunes District. We appreciate everything you've done and wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Do we have beavers at Oceano Lagoon? We sure do!

During a recent walk along the Guiton Trail, we spotted a beaver enjoying a meal of willow branches along the lagoon's shoreline. Beavers are the largest rodents in North America and are well adapted for a diet of woody plants. Their distinctive orange teeth contain iron, helping them chew through branches like the willow tree seen in this video.

Want to learn more about these fascinating animals? Join State Park Docent Dan for a guided Beaver Walk around Oceano Lagoon. Learn about the history of beavers in California, their unique adaptations, why they were heavily trapped during the fur trade, and search for signs of beaver activity along the way.

Day Use Vehicle passes are now available for advance purchase. Passes are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

NOTICE: Oceano Dunes SVRA Reopening to Vehicle Day Use, including OHV's, and Camping

California State Parks is pleased to announce the reopening of vehicle day use and camping south of Arroyo Grande Creek at Oceano Dunes SVRA effective tomorrow, Thursday, 5/21/26, at 9 a.m.

Visitors are advised that recent natural wind activity may have significantly altered dune topography throughout the park. For your safety, please use caution while recreating and operating vehicles within the dunes. Before proceeding into unfamiliar areas, visitors are strongly encouraged to scout their route. Steep slip faces, drop-offs, soft sand conditions, and other terrain hazards may be present and may not be immediately visible from approaching angles.

Visitors are also reminded that the current shorebird nesting season is underway. To help protect sensitive wildlife habitat and assist in preserving OHV recreational opportunities at Oceano Dunes SVRA, please remain out of all fenced and posted closure areas, obey the 15-mph shoreline speed limit, and remember that wildlife always has the right-of-way.

We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during the temporary closure and look forward to welcoming visitors back to Oceano Dunes SVRA.

Join us at Pismo State Beach for a free, family friendly day of creativity on the coast. Build your own sandcastle or come cheer on the teams. This casual competition is open to all ages and all skill levels.
