Thank you for visiting Chatham County and welcoming Sheriff Steve Maynor as he begins serving as our sheriff. We’re grateful for the support and partnership of the NCSA and our fellow sheriffs across North Carolina!

NCSA President Sheriff Clee Atkinson of Edgecombe County visited Chatham County with NCSA Executive Vice President Lauren Earnhardt today. They welcomed new sheriff Steve Maynor to the Office of Sheriff, who was sworn in on July 30th following the retirement of Sheriff Mike Roberson.

Sheriff Maynor has 27 years of law enforcement experience and has been with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office since 2002. Congratulations and welcome, Sheriff Maynor!

Congratulations to Our Newest Detention Officers! 🎉🌟

Congratulations to Detention Officers Jessica Isley, Danny Josey and Carlton Williams on graduating from the Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC) at Central Carolina Community College today.

This five-week, state-required training equips new detention officers with the knowledge and skills needed to work safely and professionally inside the detention center, covering a range of topics including legal procedures, ethics, communication, mental health awareness, and CPR.

The six-member graduating class included detention officers from the Chatham, Lee and Harnett County sheriff’s offices. Family, friends and co-workers gathered on the Chatham Main Campus in Pittsboro to celebrate the graduates and their accomplishment.

We’re especially proud to recognize Carlton Williams, who earned the highest state exam average in the class with an impressive 95.5%. 👏👏👏

Completing DOCC is an important step toward serving professionally and safely in a detention environment. We congratulate Officers Isley, Josey and Williams on their hard work and look forward to the contributions they will make to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

“I’m proud of our detention officers for completing their certification course and taking this important step in their careers,” said Sheriff Steve Maynor. “I’m excited about their future and thankful for their commitment to serving our community. I also want to thank Central Carolina Community College for their continued partnership and dedication to providing professional training for our team. School starts Tuesday, August 25, and our School Resource Officers are geared up and ready to welcome students back!

We had a little fun getting ready for the new school year with our friends at Chatham County Schools -- and let’s just say, our SROs understood the assignment.

Back to school means more school buses on the road! 🚌

The first day of school is August 25, and as students across Chatham County head back to class, we’re asking everyone to help make getting to and from school a safe part of their day.

Please slow down and pay attention when you see a school bus. 🛑👈 Stop when a bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, and never pass a stopped school bus. Give yourself extra time and watch carefully for students who may be walking or crossing the road. 🚸

A few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference. Let’s work together to give our students a safe start to the new school year. 🚌

A little midweek pick-me-up for our CCSO family! 🍨😎

Today, our employees at our CCSO campuses -- the Sheriff’s Office Main/Annex, Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Center, our satellite office in Siler City, the Chatham County Justice Center, and Chatham County Detention Center -- got a chance to take a break and enjoy some free ice cream, courtesy of FirstHealth and Jeremiah's Italian Ice & Ice Cream.

This is part of a new partnership between the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and FirstHealth to support the health and well-being of our employees through in-house confidential wellness and behavioral health services available here at CCSO.

Supporting the health and well-being of our employees is important to us, and we’re grateful to FirstHealth for their partnership and for helping us support our CCSO family.

And a big thank you to Jeremiah’s Italian Ice & Ice Cream for coming out and keeping everyone cool today!

Preparing for the Worst to Protect Our Schools 🏫🚔

With the new school year just days away, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Student Resource Officers and members of the Special Incident Response Team spent several hours Thursday conducting an active shooter training exercise at Bennett School.

The school was empty, but the training was anything but routine. Deputies used cardboard representations of innocent victims throughout the building while officers practiced responding to a simulated active shooter using SIMS training rounds. Trainers evaluated the SROs throughout the exercise, with everyone treating the scenario as if it were real.

Capt. Ronnie Miller, who oversaw Thursday’s training, put the responsibility of an SRO plainly: “If there’s an active shooter, we’re not hiding. We’re wearing our uniform; we’re coming in the school. This is our job.”

While no one wants to imagine an active shooter situation occurring at a Chatham County school, preparing for the possibility is an essential part of the Sheriff’s Office’s responsibility to protect students and staff.

“We value our partnership with school administrators, teachers and staff throughout Chatham County Schools, and we will continue working together to make our schools as safe as possible for our students and staff,” Sheriff Maynor said. “School safety is personal for many of us at the Sheriff’s Office. I have children in the Chatham County Schools, my wife is an educator in Chatham County, and many of our employees have their own personal connections to our schools.”

The annual training is one of the ways CCSO prepares its SROs and other personnel to respond if an emergency occurs.

“We hope we never have to use this training in a real situation,” Maynor said. “But if that day comes, we will be ready to go in and protect the people inside.” 💙
