Hurricane Helene arrived in Western North Carolina September 25, 2024. Helene missed Chatham County by 150 miles but impacted the entire region.

Zachary Thompson of Ashville, NC was an eyewitness at the heart of the storm. He will present his experiences: “The Anatomy of a Mass Communications Outage”

Jonathan Bell, Chatham County Emergency Operations Systems Technician, was one of the FIRST First Responders deployed to the Hurricane Helene disaster. His impact is legendary. A beneficiary of his work said, “Now I know what an angel looks like!” Jonathan will present: “First-In”

Steve Newton retired December 2025 as Director Chatham County Emergency Management. Prior to retirement, Steve had numerous deployments, from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017, to volcanos in Hawaii, to multiple deployments to Western North Carolina after Helene. “What We Can Learn”

Terry Schmidt, Chatham County Community Emergency Response Team Coordinator will briefly update on the status of funding requests to fully deploy MESHCORE in Chatham County.

Following these presentations, “Help Desks” will be available for GMRS and for MESHCORE users.

Please contact Chatham County Emergency Operations Department at 919-545-8181 should you have any questions regarding the event.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

This week, we recognize and celebrate the men and women behind the headset who serve as the centerpiece of public safety in Chatham County.

Our theme this year is “First in Command.”
Before units arrive on scene, our telecommunicators are the ones in control—gathering information, prioritizing resources, and guiding callers through critical moments.

They are the first, first responders—the calm voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst moment. They answer every call for help, provide life-saving instructions, and ensure the right response from fire, EMS, and law enforcement.

They are the hub that keeps everything moving, coordinating resources, monitoring radio traffic, and supporting responders in the field every second of every day.

Across the country, 911 professionals handle hundreds of millions of calls each year—each one requiring focus, precision, and composure under pressure.

This week is about recognition—but it’s also about our team.

From decorating the center for TC Week to spending time together during recent team-building events, we are proud of the people who make up Emergency Communications.

📸 Check out a few moments from around the center this week and from our recent team trainings.

To our team:
Thank you for your dedication, professionalism, and the work you do—both seen and unseen—to keep our community safe.

You truly are First in Command.
