The Indian Stream Schoolhouse Receives Full Grant Funding for Roof Replacement
PITTSBURG, N.H. — The Indian Stream Historic Schoolhouse Project is pleased to announce receipt of a grant award to fully fund the replacement of the roof on the historic Indian Stream Schoolhouse in Pittsburg, New Hampshire.
The funding will support the complete replacement of the roof on the one-room schoolhouse, addressing a threat to both the structural integrity of the building and decades of volunteer-led restoration work. Once completed, the project will ensure the long-term preservation of one of the region’s significant historic landmarks.
Originally operating as a school from 1893 to 1939, the Indian Stream Schoolhouse is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the New Hampshire Register of Historic Places. Today, the building serves as a community learning center and local history site, welcoming residents, visitors, and school groups interested in the heritage of the North Country.
“This generous gift allows us to address one of the most critical preservation needs facing the schoolhouse,” said Ken Lundberg of the Indian Stream Historic Schoolhouse Project. “We are deeply grateful for this support and commitment to protect historic sites and supporting educational opportunities for communities.”
For nearly 40 years, restoration of the schoolhouse has been led by the Amey family, who have personally invested in the preservation of the building, supported by dozens of volunteers and community partners. The schoolhouse continues to host educational programs, historical events, and community gatherings.
Preserving a North Country Landmark
The Indian Stream Historic Schoolhouse Project is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2007 to preserve and share the history of the Indian Stream region. With minimal operating costs and strong community support, the organization focuses its resources on historic preservation, educational programming, and community engagement.
“This grant not only protects the schoolhouse today,” Dianna (Amey) Lundberg noted, “it ensures that future generations will continue to learn about the unique history of the Indian Stream region in the very place where local children once gathered to learn.”
