Detour to affect West View

PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County Department of Public Works announced today that portions of I-279 northbound and southbound in Pittsburgh, Ross Township, Ohio Township, and the surrounding North Hills communities, including significant traffic impacts to West View Borough, will be fully closed overnight periodically beginning Monday, June 15, 2026.

The closures, expected to continue through August 2026, are necessary for the demolition of Jacks Run Bridge No. 3, which previously carried Jacks Run Road over I-279 between Bellevue Road/Bellpark Drive and Kane Lane in Ross Township.

I-279 northbound will be closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North entrance ramp from Camp Horne Road.

I-279 southbound will be closed between the Camp Horne Road exit ramp (Exit 8 ) and the I-279 South entrance ramp from McKnight Road.

Closure Schedule:

Periodic full closures of I-279 northbound, southbound, and the HOV lanes will occur during the following times:
9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Friday
9:00 p.m. Friday to 9:00 a.m. Saturday
9:00 p.m. Saturday to 9:00 a.m. Sunday

Impact on West View Borough
Motorists traveling through West View Borough should anticipate increased traffic volumes on Perry Highway, Route 19, Highland Avenue, Rochester Road, and other local roadways as regional detour routes direct interstate traffic through the area.

Particular impacts are expected near the Perry Highway and Highland Avenue corridor, where southbound I-279 traffic destined for Union Avenue and surrounding Ross Township neighborhoods will be detoured through West View Borough.

Residents, businesses, and commuters should expect longer travel times during overnight closure periods and exercise caution when traveling through designated detour routes.

The detour route for Union Avenue traffic includes:
Camp Horne Road
Lowries Run Road
Rochester Road
Perry Highway (U.S. Route 19)
Highland Avenue through West View Borough
Gass Road

Traffic traveling from Union Avenue to I-279 northbound will utilize the same route in reverse.

Additional Traffic Restrictions:

When I-279 is not fully closed, the following restrictions will remain in place:

Periodic single-lane closures on I-279 northbound and southbound beneath the bridge between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily through the remainder of the project.

Overnight outbound (northbound) HOV lane closures from 7:00 p.m. until the morning directional switch at 6:00 a.m.

Periodic overnight closures of the I-279 northbound on-ramp from Cemetery Lane beginning June 5, 2026.

Project Information:

I-279 and the HOV lanes are maintained by PennDOT. The section of interstate affected by this project carries an average of 73,367 vehicles per day.

Swank Construction Company of New Kensington is the prime contractor for the $2.8 million bridge demolition project, which began on April 27, 2026.

The project is fully funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and administered by PennDOT.

Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 was closed on July 3, 2025, after inspectors identified severe corrosion within the bridge's sole support pier.

Prior to closure, the bridge carried approximately 4,631 vehicles per day.

Construction of a replacement bridge is anticipated to begin under a separate project in 2027.

Residents of West View Borough and neighboring communities are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and follow posted detour signage during overnight closure periods.

A reminder about the new law that West View Police Officers are enforcing on distracted driving. Please review the information below. There is also a link to PennDOT’s page with more information.

Effective June 5, 2025, Paul Miller’s Law takes effect across Pennsylvania, making it illegal to use a handheld device while driving - even at red lights or in traffic.

This law honors Paul Miller Jr., who was killed by a distracted driver, and aims to reduce crashes caused by distracted driving.

Key points:
• No handheld phone use (texting, calling, scrolling, etc.)
• Hands-free devices are allowed
• Emergency calls (911) are permitted

For the first year, violations will result in a warning. Starting June 6, 2026, fines begin ($50 + costs), with stronger penalties in serious cases.

Distracted driving caused over 11,200 crashes in PA in 2023—more than alcohol-related crashes. Put the phone down and help keep our roads safe.
