The BGEA Juvenile Justice Work Group has sought to address this problem by building a wide network of community partners to address issues of the school-to-prison pipeline, school pushout, lack of trust in law enforcement, access to services, lack of mental health services, lack of trained professionals and a system disconnected from communities.

Let’s Help Our Youth Have a Safe & Memorable Summer

Summer is meant for making memories—cookouts, amusement parks, concerts, sporting events, parties, hanging out with friends, and simply enjoying time away from school.

Most of our young people are doing exactly that.

But as we’ve seen recently, large gatherings can sometimes change quickly. That’s why one of the most important things we can do isn’t to stop our youth from having fun—it’s to prepare them before they walk out the door.

💬 Before they head out, have the conversation.

Ask questions like:
✅ Who are you going with?
✅ Where will you be?
✅ How are you getting there—and how are you getting home?
✅ Do we have each other’s locations?
✅ What time will you be home?
✅ If plans change, will you let me know?
✅ Who is a trusted adult you can call if you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable?
✅ What will you do if a situation starts to get out of control?

These conversations aren’t about control—they’re about care.

Our youth deserve the freedom to enjoy their summer while also having the tools to make safe decisions and the confidence to leave a situation that doesn’t feel right.

Parents, caregivers, mentors, family members, and trusted adults all play a role in helping our young people navigate today’s world.

Let’s continue encouraging our youth to have fun, look out for one another, and make this a summer filled with great memories—for all the right reasons. 🧡

Have fun. Stay aware. Stay connected. Stay safe.

🚨 Teen Takeovers Are a Warning Sign — Not Just a Headline 🚨

Recent incidents involving large groups of youth gathering and engaging in disruptive behavior have many families, businesses, and community members concerned.

But before we label our young people as “the problem,” let’s ask a different question:

What support do they need?

Many youth are navigating challenges that adults don’t always see—family conflict, mental health struggles, peer pressure, school issues, trauma, and a lack of positive opportunities.

When those needs go unaddressed, situations can escalate. Caring Connections for YOUth exists to help connect young people and families to resources before a situation becomes a crisis.

If you’re a parent, educator, business owner, community member, or concerned neighbor and you’re worried about a young person who may be heading down the wrong path, don’t wait until it becomes a police matter.

✅ Fighting
✅ Truancy
✅ Parent-child conflict
✅ Disorderly conduct
✅ Youth in need of guidance, support, or intervention

Caring Connections for YOUth provides access to community-based services, case management, and a network of support designed to help youth succeed and avoid involvement in the juvenile justice system.

Let’s be proactive, not reactive.

Day of Giving celebrations continue!

As we continue celebrating Gwen Elliott Day of Giving, join Dr. Kathi Elliott and the Gwen’s Girls team tonight at Motivational Mondays at Noblemen Cigar Lounge as we honor the legacy of our founder, Commander Gwendolyn J. Elliott, whose birthday would have been today.

Our staff will serve as guest bartenders, and every tip received will support Gwen’s Girls. Come enjoy great company, meaningful conversations, and support a great cause while raising a glass to a legacy of empowerment.
