STATEMENT: END THE WAR ON OUR YOUTH!

In yet another attack on our city’s schools, youth, and black communities the Pittsburgh Public Schools Board of Directors voted last Wednesday to close 9 schools. This vote comes after years of pressure from the community to keep schools open.

This is far from the only attack on Pittsburgh’s youth, much of which results from a system which puts the interests of businesses and nonprofits over the interests of the working class.

Read through our statement and get involved to help make a difference!

Last Tuesday night, Pittsburgh teachers, parents, and community members spoke to the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) Board of Directors at a public hearing prior to Wednesday’s vote on the “Future Ready Plan”, which proposes to close nine PPS schools in the city.

Time and time again, our community has extensively and publicly demonstrated to the PPS Board why this plan does not have the best interests of our community’s children and students in mind.

Despite the elected Board members’ duty to represent our community’s needs, they regrettably voted in favor of the school closures plan yesterday.

Still, we must not back down in making our voices and needs heard! There is still work to be done - please be sure to visit 412Justice.org for more information on their Education Rights Network.

PITTSBURGH SAYS NO SCHOOL CLOSURES: Dozens of Pittsburghers signed up to comment tonight on the plan to close 9 schools and not a single person spoke in favor of it! Regardless of the vote tomorrow the working people of this city will continue the fight!

🇵🇸 Support artists in Palestine! On Wednesday, June 3rd, Khalil’s Restaurant will be hosting an evening of solidarity, storytelling, and support for Palestinian artisans.

Pittsburgh is honored to welcome Morgan Cooper Totah, founder of Handmade Palestine, a fair-trade project based in Ramallah that works directly with Palestinian artisans to sustain traditional crafts, preserve rich heritage, and provide a means for artisans to support their families under occupation. Some may know Morgan through her social media work documenting daily life and resistance in Palestine, and she has changed her travel plans to be with us in Pittsburgh for this special fundraiser. Read more about Handmade Palestine and the talented artisans at handmadepalestine.eu!

Come shop beautiful handmade Palestinian crafts and hear directly from Morgan about the realities facing artisans in Palestine. Bring your friends, share widely, and come through for Palestine. Proceeds from food at this event will go towards planting trees in Palestine through Mashjar Juthour.
