There’s still time to donate a new or gently used coat to the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM)'s annual Share the Warmth Coat Drive!

Drop off used winter coats at Strong Cleaners or Magic Dry Cleaners by October 9 to have them cleaned for free. Once cleaned, the coats will be delivered directly to EECM!

Bring your donation in plastic bags and let the clerk know that they are for the EECM Coat Drive. Bring in your own dry cleaning or laundry at the same time and receive 50% off when you pre-pay! (no leather, suede, fur, or alterations)

You can also drop off gently used and new coats (must have tags!) at East End Ministry, 6140 Station Street, Entrance A until October 9.

Help us give our neighbors the gift of warmth this winter season!

Before she was known around the world as a jazz legend, Mary Lou Williams was known around East Liberty simply as “the Little Piano Girl.” 🎹

Born Mary Elfrieda Scruggs in Atlanta in 1910, Williams moved to Pittsburgh with her family as a young child and grew up right here in East Liberty. Her talent revealed itself early. By the time she was six or seven, she was already playing piano at parties around Pittsburgh and earning a reputation as a child prodigy.

Soon, the "Little Piano Girl of East Liberty" would become something much bigger.

Williams went on to become one of the most influential pianists, composers, and arrangers in jazz, working with artists including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Dizzy Gillespie and helping shape the sound of jazz across generations.

But East Liberty was where it all began. And now, more than a century later, her name has a permanent spot on the streets who helped raise her.

On September 11, a portion of East Liberty Boulevard was honorarily renamed Mary Lou Williams Way.

If you haven't spotted the new “Mary Lou Williams Way” yet, you can find it at the corner of East Liberty Blvd. and Larimer Ave.

Did you know that 38% of rental units in East Liberty are long-term affordable?

And over the past seven years, we’ve increasingly turned our attention at ELDI to expanding affordable and attainable homeownership opportunities as well, creating 71 homes since 2020 across the East End.

More than half of those homes were sold to affordable buyers earning 80% or less of Area Median Income (AMI), while another 21% were sold to workforce buyers earning between 80% and 120% AMI.

61% of the buyers were minority households.

For us, creating homeownership opportunities is about more than rehabbing houses. It’s about helping more people put down roots, build equity, and share in the growth of the East End, especially those who have historically been excluded from doing so.

🏡 26 homes. 26 homeowners. One major milestone.

Five years after we began our $8+ million New Markets Tax Credit Homeownership Project, we’re officially bringing it to a close.

Last November, we celebrated a major milestone: putting the finishing touches on the final home in our 26-home New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) Homeownership Project.

Now, we have one more reason to celebrate. 🎉

As of September of this year, every home in the project has been sold, with the final home, 121 Shetland Street, currently under agreement. 🔑

That means 26 homes across East Liberty, Larimer, and Garfield are now in the hands of homeowners.

Across the 26 homes:

• 44% were affordable (available to buyers earning 80% or less of the Area Median Income)
• 28% were workforce (available to buyers earning 80-120% of the Area Median Income)
• 28% were market-rate

Additionally, 66% of the homebuyers were people of color.

That mix was intentional.

For decades, we have been working at ELDI to realize the community’s vision of a vibrant, mixed-income East Liberty with housing opportunities for people across a range of incomes. And while we have largely achieved that goal, maintaining that balance is easier said than done.
