Good morning everyone. This is Detective Bill Skweres and I have a special announcement!

Today, my partner K9 Cypress, turns 3 years old! 🎈💛

It’s hard to believe how much this little yellow Lab has accomplished already. From sniffing out hidden cellphones and electronic storage devices to visiting schools, first responders, veterans, and kids throughout the community, Cypress has definitely made an impact everywhere she goes.

She may wear a badge and have an important job as an Electronic Storage Detection K9, but at the end of the day, she’s still a Lab — which means her priorities remain pretty simple: work, food, attention, more food, and figuring out why I’m not feeding her right now. 😂

I couldn’t ask for a better partner. She makes going to work a little more fun, puts smiles on faces everywhere we go, and somehow manages to steal the spotlight every single time. (I’ve accepted my role as her chauffeur and leash holder.)

The application window for the Municipality of Penn Hills Police Officer I hiring process is scheduled to close tomorrow, Monday, August 3, 2026, at 12:00 noon Eastern Time.

More than 100 applications have been submitted to date. Once the application window closes and the submission count has been administratively reconciled, we will update the community with the final number received.

🚧 Traffic Advisory: Hulton Road Slide Repair Begins July 16 🚧

The Penn Hills Police Department would like to advise motorists that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin slide repair work along Hulton Road (Route 2058) on Thursday, July 16, weather permitting.

Beginning at approximately 9:00 AM, single-lane alternating traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals will be in effect on Hulton Road between Indiana Road and Colgan Terrace. Traffic restrictions will remain in place 24 hours a day through early August while crews complete the necessary repairs.

Motorists should expect delays, consider alternate routes when possible, and allow additional travel time through the area. Please use caution when traveling through the work zone, obey all posted signs and temporary traffic signals, and remain alert for construction workers and equipment.

We appreciate your patience as PennDOT completes this important infrastructure improvement project. Thank you for doing your part to help keep our roads and work zones safe.

This past Tuesday marked a truly historic moment, not only for the Penn Hills Police Department, but for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Please join us in congratulating Detective Dustin Hess, recipient of the 2026 National Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Award, presented by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. This prestigious national honor recognizes law enforcement officers who exemplify integrity, courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting their communities while advancing the fight against illegal drugs.

Even more remarkable, Detective Hess became the first law enforcement officer from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to ever receive this national award. Out of agencies across the United States, a detective from Penn Hills was selected to represent the very best of our profession.

The Penn Hills Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the National Elks, the Wilkins Township Elks, and the Oakmont Elks for this incredible recognition and for their continued support of law enforcement. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Deborah Raible and Plum Mayor Harry Schlegel, whose dedication, generosity, and countless efforts helped make this unforgettable opportunity possible for Detective Hess and our department.

For those who know Detective Hess, this recognition comes as no surprise.

His career has never been defined by seeking recognition. It has been defined by consistency, professionalism, humility, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Day after day, he has quietly chosen to make a difference, and this national award simply reflects what his fellow officers and this community have known for years.

People often measure police departments by the number of officers they employ. We measure ourselves by the impact our officers have on the people they serve.

Who says a “smaller” municipal police department can’t stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best in America? This past Tuesday proved they can.

The rest of the country saw what our community has always known. Penn Hills is home to exceptional officers, remarkable residents, and a community that believes in service, integrity, and one another. There is nothing small about the heart of Penn Hills.

As Chief Bonace shared during the Penn Hills recognition ceremony, “this award is about more than one moment. It is about the standard. It represents the work that gets done when nobody is watching and the kind of people this profession is built on.

One of the best parts of any community event is seeing it through the eyes of the people who were there.

The Williams family generously shared these photographs with the Penn Hills Police Department and gave us permission to share them with our community. We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase these moments from their perspective.

These images capture what made the day so special: neighbors connecting with neighbors, children playing, families spending time together, volunteers giving back, local businesses supporting the event, and officers enjoying meaningful conversations with the people they serve.

Sometimes the greatest measure of an event isn’t the number of people who attend. It’s hearing directly from the people who call that neighborhood home.

Following Sunday’s Pizza with the Police event at Ross Street Park, the Penn Hills Police Department received the following heartfelt message from the Williams family and longtime Ross Street Park residents. We were deeply humbled by their words.

This event was never about the Police Department. It was about the children. It was about neighbors reconnecting, families making memories, and a community coming together around a park that has meant so much to generations of Penn Hills residents.

We are honored to share their message exactly as they intended it, and we extend our sincere thanks to every resident, volunteer, business, vendor, first responder, and partner who helped make this day possible.

Together, we proved once again that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, extraordinary things can happen.

🚧 PARKING & TRAFFIC INFORMATION 🚧

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Pizza with the Police today starting at 1pm! We will be at Ross Street Park, 10 Ross Street, Penn Hills, PA 15235. To help ensure a safe and enjoyable event for everyone, please review the following parking and traffic information before arriving.

🅿️ Event Parking

Parking will be available along the roadways highlighted in yellow on the attached map. Volunteers will be on site to assist motorists with parking and to help keep travel lanes clear for emergency vehicles and local residents.

🚧 Road Restrictions

To safely accommodate the event, the following roadway restrictions will be in place during the event:

• Elk Road at Mt. Carmel Road will be restricted to resident and emergency vehicle access only.

• Blackadore Avenue, between Mt. Carmel Road and Beechford Road, will also be restricted to resident and emergency vehicle access only.

🚗 Traffic Pattern

Motorists traveling on Mt. Carmel Road who would normally use Blackadore Avenue will be directed to continue to Mason Road and then to Beechford Road, which will provide access to the lower end of Blackadore Avenue.

🚑 Emergency Access

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times. We respectfully ask everyone to follow the directions of our officers and parking volunteers so we can ensure safe access for emergency responders and residents throughout the event.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work together to provide a safe, family-friendly afternoon for our community.

We can’t wait to see you all at Ross Street Park from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for an afternoon of pizza, music, games, and community. See you Sunday! 🍕🚔

Tomorrow, Ross Street Park is about to become the happiest place in Penn Hills.

We’ve secured the pizza.

We’ve got the DJ.

We’ve got basketballs.

We’ve got the dunk tank.

We’ve got face painting.

We’ve got giveaways.

We’ve got your Penn Hills Police Officers ready to spend the afternoon laughing, talking, playing, and making memories with all of you.

The only thing we’re missing… is YOU.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room.

Yes… we’ve heard some of you have been “training” for the Beat the Officer Free Throw Challenge. We respect the confidence. We also reserve the right to blame the basketball, the rim, or possibly even gravity if we lose. 😅🏀

But tomorrow is about something much bigger than pizza.🍕

It’s about neighbors meeting neighbors.🫂
