As we have all heard, the demand for pets during the pandemic has increased due to families being home and having the opportunity to find that fury friend. This has not only increased the costs of these animals but has increased the amount of online pet scams out there. With that being said, several township residents have fallen victim to recent online pets scams. The Robinson Twp. Police Dept. would like to provide some tips so that you don't become a victim. These cybercriminals are defrauding unsuspected buyers by trying to sell animals which do not exist.

1. Please do your research. Just because you are directed to a website that looks legit, does not mean the site isn't fictitious. Look for and thoroughly read the on-line reviews.

2. Ask the seller for multiple pictures of the pet you are inquiring about including a picture of it near a recent newspaper. Scammers pull photos and videos off of the internet all the time.

3. Try to avoid paying cash via money order, Western Union or cash apps. Try to use a credit card payment so if you have the opportunity to dispute the charges.

4. Be diligent when you begin receiving multiple phone calls and texts from different numbers as well as emails from different email addresses.

5. Buyer beware if the seller claims that he is in one state however, wants you to send money to another state or country.

6. Be skeptical if the seller or a separate courier service contacts you and advises that additional fees for vet visits, pet insurance or , "refundable temperature controlled" cargo crates are required.

7. It should raise a red flag if e-mail communication has broken English or very poor grammar.

8. We know that there are many success stories in which pets are flown in from another state, but there appears to be just as many fraudulent purchases as well. If at all possible, try to get in your vehicle and actually see the pet in person.

We hope these tips assist you in finding a forever home for your new pets.

-any suspicious persons or vehicles

-any medical conditions that require immediate attention

-any active event that would require police, fire or medics

-ordinance issues that can not be resolved by police action (civil property line disputes, etc.)

-questions about police activity (remember: if you need to be evacuated or there is an immediate danger, the police will come to you)
