United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 7 Pittsburgh The USCG Auxiliary is the uniformed, civilian volunteer component of the USCG. The base has adjusted and coped well with COVID-19.

Had a wonderful visit at Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City two weeks ago. It was insightful to learn more about how extensive their Search and Rescue operations are. These brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way to rescue those in distress. After our conversations about COVID-19, we toured the facility. It's always great to speak with the men and women who selflessly serve our great nation.

Old Elizabeth Pool Navigation Channel Realignment

Following the removal of the Monongahela Lock and Dam 3, also known as the Elizabeth Lock and Dam, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted hydrographic surveys of the surrounding riverbed to analyze potential changes to channel contours and water depths. Leveraging this updated data, the Coast Guard Cutter (CGC) OSAGE, has realigned 21 channel buoys from mile marker 23.5 to 41.5 on the Monongahela River to better align with the new location of the navigation channel. Mariners are advised that although the navigation channel has been updated on published charts, physical buoy location changes may take up to 14 days to be fully reflected in said charts. Mariners must familiarize themselves with the new channel configurations and are encouraged to utilize the latest published charts and/or make necessary chart corrections.

Additionally, due to an accumulation of sediment flowing through from the left descending bank in the vicinity of Mingo Creek, the channel depth may be impacted. Mariners are urged to exercise caution while approaching mile marker 29.7.

Join us in congratulating Auxiliarists Bob Brandenstein and Andrew DeWitt. They were recently awarded the Auxiliary Medal of Operational Merit by the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector Ohio Valley, for their participation as crew members in a lifesaving incident on the Monongahela River. Two other members of the boat crew, Anthony Waters and Victor Rogers, received the award at an earlier ceremony. The awards were presented by Commander Metz, Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard MSU, Pittsburgh.

Water Safety Education in Our Communities!

This week, members of Flotilla 07-02 (Two Pittsburgh), Flotilla 07-07 (Mon-Yough), and Flotilla 07-09 (Mon Valley) had the opportunity to visit both elementary schools in the Ringgold School District, where they presented the "Water & Kids" Safe Boating Course to 4th-grade students.

In partnership with the Washington County Commissioners Office, our dedicated Auxiliary members educated local youth about the importance of water safety, safe boating practices, and making smart decisions whenever they are near the water.

We are proud to support initiatives that help keep our communities safe while empowering the next generation with knowledge and skills that can make a difference for a lifetime.

A special thank you to the students, teachers, school staff, and our community partners for welcoming us into their classrooms and helping make this program such a success.
Together, we are building safer and more informed communities, one student at a time.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 7 supported the Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh by conducting safety patrols on the Allegheny River race course and surrounding waters, helping maintain a safe environment for rowers and river users alongside event organizers and other public safety agencies.

The Head of the Ohio is one of the largest regattas in the country, drawing competitors of all ages and abilities from across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and southern Canada to race on Pittsburgh's rivers.

Congratulations to the Head of the Ohio regatta organizers and the Three Rovers Rowing Association for a successful event!

Heartland District Eastern Region leadership met this week during the District Training event, with participation from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley, to strengthen coordination and reinforce mission readiness across the region.

The District also held its elections, welcoming District Commodore A. Waters, Chief of Staff V. Rogers, and District Captain (East) B. Estes for the upcoming two‑year term. We extend our appreciation to Commodore Boneau for two years of dedicated service and leadership.

In addition, training sessions were open to all District members, supporting our shared commitment to professionalism, preparedness, and service alongside the active‑duty Coast Guard.
