CMUPD Officers recently trained with Northern Regional Special Response Team medics in NAEMT Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC).

TCCC is the military standard for lifesaving trauma care in high-threat environments, with training tiers ranging from All Service Members through advanced medical providers.

Thank you to the Northern Regional SRT medics for sharing their knowledge and helping our officers strengthen their lifesaving skills.

This week, CMU first-year students participated in Well-Being Day sessions within their housing communities. As part of Well-Being Day, students also attended a sampler of CMUPD’s Scotty Strong Self-Defense program. Students learned basic personal-safety strategies and practiced skills designed to build confidence, awareness, and preparedness.

CMUPD extends its heartfelt gratitude to Karen Frye of Quilting on the Farm and the dedicated volunteers behind the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Honor Quilts. Through handcrafted quilts, this volunteer initiative honors Pennsylvania law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty, offering their families a lasting tribute to their service, sacrifice, and legacy.

We are honored that a beautiful quilt was created in memory of our fallen brother, Police Officer James Simonetti (End of Watch: October 13, 2021), and presented to his son, CMUPD Security Officer David Simonetti, as a lasting tribute to his father's service and sacrifice.

We are sincerely grateful to Karen and everyone involved for this meaningful act of kindness.

Chief Lauth, along with his Command Staff, recently attended the Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents for Key Decision Makers course held at Duquesne University. Members of CMU Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity also joined in this valuable two-day training.

This course provided in-depth, operational-level training that builds on key concepts from school-based crisis management awareness programs. Participants engaged in hands-on, scenario-based exercises alongside law enforcement, school personnel, and community stakeholders.

Topics covered included all-hazards planning, preparedness, response and recovery, vulnerability assessments, threat assessment management, and collaborative decision-making during critical incidents.

Training like this strengthens our ability to protect and serve and reinforces our ongoing commitment to keeping the CMU community safe.

Please join us in congratulating Carnegie Mellon University Police Department’s newest police officer, John J. Porter, on graduating from the Community College of Beaver County Police Academy yesterday!

JJ’s hard work and dedication were evident throughout the academy, where he also earned the Driver Proficiency Award an outstanding accomplishment that highlights his skill and commitment to excellence.

We are proud to welcome Officer Porter to CMUPD and look forward to the positive impact he will make on our campus and community. Congratulations, JJ!

CMUPD Safety Alert: PA Hands Free Law

Paul Miller’s Law is now in effect in Pennsylvania.

Drivers may not use a handheld phone or mobile device while driving, including at red lights or stopped in traffic.

Violations may result in a $50 fine, plus fees.
