⚠️ WEATHER SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️

Many roads across Allegheny County are experiencing flooding, downed trees and downed wires.

🚗 Avoid traveling unless necessary and never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown.

🚦 If a traffic light is without power, treat the intersection as a stop sign in every direction.

Stay safe and stay weather aware.

Significant rainfall from the severe thunderstorm has created flooding conditions and brought down trees and power lines in several areas of the city.

Public Safety is standing up all of its assets in the event of high water rescues if needed.

Motorists please avoid flooded roads - it only takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry away cars, double that amount, 24 inches, for trucks and SUVs.

It is NEVER safe to walk or drive into flood waters. Please heed all barriers, they are there for your safety.

Turn around, don't drown!

UPDATE: We've added the Mt. Washington HAL Center to the list of Cooling Centers open today and tomorrow -- from 8AM to 7PM.

As forecasted temperatures are expected to exceed 90° this week, we are activating Cooling Centers at five Healthy Active Living (Senior) Centers from Tuesday, September 1st throughThursday, September 3rd. These centers will be open from 8AM to 7PM. ☀️🌡️

The Director of Public Safety, Sheldon Williams, a former Air Force Emergency Manager, met with a team of Emergency Managers at the Pennsylvania Air National Guard Base near Pittsburgh.

Director Williams, who served 18 years in the Army Reserve and Air Force National Guard, shared insights on crisis leadership and resiliency.

His experience and leadership highlighted the significance of preparedness, coordination, and readiness when it matters most.

Flood Watch is in effect for our area until 2pm today (8/20/26)

The Flood Watch (in effect till 2pm) has been expanded to include Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Fayette counties in SW PA and Preston County in northern WV. Heavy rain in storms moving along a stalled boundary could lead to flooding of low-lying areas, rivers/creeks and roads.

Back-to-school season is here! Let’s help keep students safe as they travel to and from school.

• Stop for school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop arms

• Remind children to wait safely away from the curb

• Drivers, watch carefully for students near roads and bus stops

• Teach kids to never cross behind a school bus

• Look both ways before crossing the street
