sidewall Project and BOOM Concepts Present Quaishawn Whitlock's “Buffering”

Quaishawn Whitlock is an interdisciplinary artist, whose work reflects the discovery and/or identity, representation, and struggle of Blackness. Blackness; meaning the physical, mental and emotional identity of the black body, investigating the past, present, and the trends of the future. The main practice of Quaishawn’s work exists within the realm of Printmaking; screen printing, intaglio, and relief. "Printmaking for me serves as a language for research and discovery; as the practice is so rich with process that it lends itself perfectly to experimentation, but even more so, into the accessibility of the experience. Both in the sense of the personal opinion/takeaway for the work, but also in terms of what is happening to reach the outcome idealized on the gallery wall."

Art appreciators are encouraged to safely visit the exhibition during a social distance walk, run, or bike ride in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Bloomfield. The art is available for public viewing at the corner of 608 S. Millvale & Lima Way, PGH 15224.

BOOM Concepts will not be open for #Unblurred First Friday Gallery crawl but you can come by and see our DISPLAY artwork by Jessica Gatlin.

"Apropos Proposal & Keeper of the Flag"

About the Work: Apropos Proposal is a textile assemblage created by Jessica Gatlin in 2019, which reinterprets the U.S. flag utilizing the colors and motifs found in watermelon. This flag celebrates sustainability and self-reliance. It rejects shame. And it proposes questions about seeds and seedlessness.

Keeper of the Flag is both the overarching project title and a position currently held by Elizabeth Chodos. The Keeper acts as a steward, partnering with the artist to exhibit and maintain the public life of the flag. Together the keeper and the artist seek out spaces and organizations which serve and/or benefit BIPOC, proposing the flag for public display and dialogue.

Thank you to Dezmanian for sharing their story as number 250 in The Amplify LGBTQ Project project. "How would you describe yourself NOW in terms of “being out”? Proud but I don’t wear it on my sleeve. I am a black man who happens to be gay. It doesn’t define me. IDC if people can tell if I am gay or not. Some don’t, some do. But I am still proud and OUT. Tell me about the first LGBTQ person whom you met. What impact did they have on your life? It was a friend at music camp. I played brass instruments and he danced with flags. I wanted to be him. I wanted to be happy. I wanted to dance and be creative." #AMPLIFY
Love to share what you are doing with our community. Please message me back. Thanks!
