We are just over ONE WEEK away from our spookiest event of the year!

Join us on Friday, October 30th as we embrace Hannibal and horror for “The Silence of the Lambs Cage Night”, transforming our historic building into two full floors of seasonal entertainment and spooky thrills. While open to all ages, keep in mind the film is rated R and will be screened in its entirety as part of the evening.

The heart of this event is a life-sized replica of Hannibal’s cage, complete with a live Hannibal Lecter and the original rug and bed-frame from the film. Who will be brave enough to get a photo with Hannibal, in the same room where the infamous cage scene was filmed…?! Speaking of scary, costumes are encouraged. However, please no full-face masks or weapons.

Stroll the vendor marketplace, featuring some of the spookiest merchandise and entertainment in Pittsburgh. A variety of specialty refreshments will be available to purchase, including a cash bar for guests ages 21 and older. If you do intend to partake, please be sure to bring a valid photo ID.

Although there was recently talk about possibly locating Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed 10-E Electra near Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific Ocean, it has unfortunately proven not be her aircraft, but a configuration of debris instead.

However, at Soldiers & Sailors, we recently found her in our photo archives! Of course we didn’t find physical remains, but we did find an unpublished photo of the famed aviator with some mechanics who are working on the plane. Earhart never served in the military, but she did briefly work as a nurse's aid in a Canadian military hospital during WWI.

We are pleased to share this rare photo of Amelia Earhart with our friends and followers!

The last major campaigns of World War II in Europe took place in 1944 and 1945. Intense combat culminated in the fall of the French fortress of Metz on November 22, 1944, which opened the Saar region to Patton’s Third Army. On another front, Allied forces in the Ardennes were taken by surprise when the German army launched a major offensive on December 16, 1944, which became known as the Battle of the Bulge. Victory in both campaigns directly contributed to the defeat of N**i Germany.

Soldiers & Sailors is developing a new permanent exhibit to honor local veterans of these key battles. The museum possesses exceptional artifacts from the two campaigns that will allow visitors to feel like they are experiencing history firsthand. We have the content ready; we now need your support to create the best display possible. Our current showcase areas are outdated and are being replaced with new, state-of-the-art display spaces. To establish a dedicated case for Metz and the Battle of the Bulge, we need your help to raise $25,000 to match an existing donation of $20,000. When we reach the goal, the current case will be removed, and a new, enhanced structure will be installed. This upgrade will include additional depth for the case, new lighting, and humidity control. The most significant improvement will be a specially engineered single-pane glass door that eliminates visual impairments. By donating today, you can honor the memory of our heroes—perhaps family members, neighbors, or friends who fought in Europe during the war’s final months. They deserve to be remembered.

To donate towards the meaningful revisions to this exhibit, visit our donation page at https://www.soldiersandsailorshall.org/museum-exhibit-redesign-project-campaign/!

Do you see the big difference between these two exhibit spaces? The first photo shows one of our older exhibit spaces, and the second photo shows an exhibit space that has been newly renovated as part of our Museum Exhibit Redesign Campaign! 🪖

Our goal is to preserve and best display our veterans’ historical artifacts for museum visitors. Upgrades including new lighting, engineered glass and door systems, and humidity control will create an ideal environment to preserve and display our collection. This renovation will help us best display our collection of personal stories, immersive exhibits, and interactive technologies, resulting in the ultimate experience for our visitors.

This extensive renovation promises an exciting future for visitors of all ages. Upgrading exhibits, installing cutting-edge technology, and creating a greatly improved and expanded platform for learning, are essential as we continue to educate the community about our nation’s veterans, and we need your help to make it happen!
