Check out this view from the main parking area at Parvin State Park. The parking lot was created to accommodate the needs of guests in the 1930s. On an average day in July of 1934 one thousand people would access the beach area! Because of this high volume of guests, a parking area was desperately needed to accommodate all of those guests. A new parking lot was created by the CCC in conjunction with the construction of the beach building which acted as a bathhouse for swimmers and sunbathers.

As cars became the main source of transportation and local families were able to have their own vehicle, accommodations like these became even more crucial. The parking lot and the guardhouse still stand today, a testament to the work done by the Civilian Conservation Corps at Parvin.

Step back into time when the Civilian Conservation Corps created and put the finishing touches on the beach complex area at Parvin State Park. Pictured here are enrollees in the winter of 1937 working on the courtyard and planter boxes. Winter was a crucial period of work for the CCC; despite the cold temperatures, beach and lake maintenance were completed during the cooler months.

At this time, groups of World War I veterans joined the company at Parvin. These men provided experience and technical training that younger enrollees did not always have, which enhanced the speed and craftmanship of the projects completed by the company. Their work is still standing today, and these planter boxes still serve as a vital native plant area for our pollinators.

Much of Parvin's history is owed to the work completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and early 1940s. We will be sharing these 'before and after' videos at some of the most iconic, or well traveled areas of the park to show you how the park has changed.

Seen here is historic Cabin 18. While today you can rent and stay in this cabin, in the past this site served as the dwelling for the park caretaker and even as the nature center. These cabins were built in the late 1930s by the men of the CCC at Parvin. Their goal was to create a space for recreation and relaxation at the newly completed Thundergust Lake. Their legacy is still felt today as families still utilize these cabins for their camping and hiking trips at Parvin.

Congratulations to Sherri Riddle, our July Parvin Perspectives featured photographer!

This month's spotlight captures a quiet moment of wildlife at Parvin. Sherri’s photo showcases a great blue heron resting on a fallen log along one of our lakes, with a surprise guest joining the scene — a turtle soaking up the peaceful moment below.

Sherri shared:
"Parvin often acts as a sanctuary to me. I try to notice little details that others might overlook on my walks there. Recently, on a morning walk, I noticed this great blue heron resting on an overturned tree lying in the lake’s edge so I quickly snapped the pic and went on my way. When I looked at the pic, to my surprise he had a respite buddy, the mighty turtle resting toward the bottom of the photo. They looked like uncommon friends."

Moments like this remind us that Parvin isn't just a place to visit... it's a place to slow down, connect with nature, and discover something new around every corner.
