Come watch some great lifters and support the Wood County Sheriff's Department! Unfortunately, due to family events Chief Duerr and Officer Wayerski from the Pittsville PD won't be able to compete again. This gives the other law enforcement departments in Wood County the chance to take over as the county's strongest law enforcement department, just for this year. Last year, Officer Wayerski and Chief Duerr both placed first in their respective divisions. Wood County Sheriff

Click It or Ticket safety campaign reminds drivers and passengers to buckle up

The Pittsville Police Department will join law enforcement agencies across the state and nation to promote seat belt use and remind drivers of the lifesaving benefits of buckling up. The Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign runs from May 11-31 this year.
“Buckling up is a simple action drivers and passengers can do to stay safe on the road,” Officer Riley Wayerski said. “Wearing a seat belt is one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries and save lives during a crash. During the Click It or Ticket campaign, we join officers throughout the state stepping up seat belt enforcement and education to prevent tragedies on our roads.”

Seat belt use is one of the most effective ways to protect drivers and passengers from injury or death in a crash. In Wisconsin, preliminary numbers show 145 drivers and passengers who died in crashes in 2025 were not wearing a seat belt. Wisconsin’s primary seat belt law allows law enforcement to stop and cite motorists for failing to wear a seat belt. Penalties are higher for transporting unrestrained children and passengers can also be cited. Failure to fasten a seat belt is among the most common traffic violations in Wisconsin.

“Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — should make buckling up a habit,” Officer Wayerski said. “Traveling on the road without a seat belt is dangerous. We are asking friends and family to remind each other to buckle up and help us keep the roads safe.”

The Click It or Ticket campaign coincides with the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which is the first long holiday weekend of summer. The roads are especially busy during this season, so officers will be out encouraging motorist to wear their seat belts.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Department, Marshfield Police Department, Pittsville Police Department, Nekoosa Police Department, Port Edwards Police Department and Grand Rapids Police Department are stepping up enforcement to get impaired drivers off the roads this holiday season. Starting December 12th through New Year’s Day, agencies within Wood County joins law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin and Nationwide for the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday enforcement campaign.

The campaign takes place over the holidays to prevent impaired driving crashes and ensure everyone can celebrate safely.

• During the 2019-2023 December months, there were 4,931 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. In December 2023 alone, 1,038 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.
• Nighttime driving in December 2023 was significantly more dangerous than daytime driving, with 30% of drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes between the hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. being drunk. Almost half (47%) of drivers involved in fatal crashes between the hours of midnight and 2:59 a.m. were drunk.
• In December 2023, drunk male drivers were involved in fatal crashes at a much higher rate (22%) compared to female drivers (18%).
• Young drivers ages 21-34 accounted for the highest percentage (27%) of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes in December 2023.
“We are not just focused on stopping or arresting drivers. Our goal is to save lives,” Sheriff Becker said. “Someone is killed or injured in an impaired driving crash about every two hours in Wisconsin. We must put an end to these preventable tragedies so everyone can make it home for the holidays.”

Everyone can help with this effort:

• If you plan to celebrate, identify a sober designated driver, or find a safe ride home. Never allow someone who is impaired to get behind the wheel.

• If you suspect a driver is impaired call 911. Provide as much detail as possible on the driver, vehicle, and location.

• Some bars and restaurants have programs to provide patrons a safe ride home.

• Buckle up and put your phone down. Every trip, every time.

“Preventing impaired driving is so simple, but it requires a commitment from everyone in Wisconsin. Help us keep you, your friends and your family safe this holiday season. Talk with your loved ones about getting home safely and always drive sober,” Sheriff Becker said.
