City of Placerville

City of Placerville City of Placerville, California After the discovery of gold in nearby Coloma, California by James W.

Marshall in 1848 sparked the California Gold Rush, the small town now known as Placerville was known as Dry Diggins after the manner in which the miners moved cartloads of dry soil to running water to separate the gold from the soil. Later, in 1849, the town earned its most common historical name, "Hangtown," because of the numerous hangings that had occurred there. By 1850, the temperance league

and a few local churches had begun to request that a friendlier name be bestowed upon the town. The name was not changed until 1854, when the City of Placerville was incorporated. At its incorporation, Placerville was the third largest town in California. In 1857, the county seat was then moved from Coloma to Placerville, where it remains today. Placerville was a central hub for the Mother Lode region's mining operations. The town had many services, including transportation (of people and goods), lodging and banking, and had a market and general store. The history of hard-rock mining is evidenced by an open and accessible Gold Bug Park & Mine, now a museum with tours and books.

🚨 Can first responders spot your home during an emergency?

🏠 If your address is faded, missing, or hard to see from the road, it’s time for an upgrade.

Make your address easy to find by installing a reflective address sign. It’s a simple, low-cost upgrade that can help emergency crews find your home faster during the day or night, even in storms or smoky conditions.

✔ Recommended sign specs:
- 6" x 18" size
- Aluminum backing
- Green reflective vinyl
- 4" high numbers

✨ You can order a reflective address sign through your local Fire Safe Council or fire department. Check your options here: https://www.edcfiresafe.org/reflective-address-sign-list

🏳️‍🌈 June 2026 is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in Placerville 🏳️‍🌈

Mayor Gotberg presented the proclamation at last night's council meeting reaffirming the values of liberty, equality, freedom of expression, and the pursuit of happiness for all people. Inspired by leaders such as Marsha P. Johnson, it honors the ongoing work to build a community where everyone can live free from discrimination and prejudice.

Placerville honors the diverse identities of its residents, visitors, and employees, recognizing that inclusion, respect, and equal opportunity strengthen our community and help everyone thrive.

Together, we support a future where all people can safely express who they are and pursue lives filled with dignity, equality, and happiness.

🔥🚒 Access matters during wildfire

When a wildfire is approaching, every second counts and access can make all the difference. Locked gates, secured perimeters, and hard-to-reach properties can slow down emergency response when time is critical.

🔑 Be prepared:
- Install a Knox lock box so firefighters can quickly and safely access your property (https://www.knoxbox.com/products/residential-knoxboxes)
- Unlock gates during evacuations and Red Flag days to avoid delays

Quick access helps first responders act fast to protect your home and community. Don’t let a locked gate stand in the way when it matters most. 🌲🔥

🚧Construction Update 🚧

The City of Placerville will begin construction of the Thompson Way, Sheridan Street, and Sherman Street Paving Projects on June 22, 2026. The first phase of work will start on Sherman and Sheridan Streets and is tentatively scheduled to continue through mid-July. During that time, Washington Street, Turner Street, Sherman Street, and a portion of Sheridan Street will be closed to through traffic – access will be provided to residents and businesses on these streets, but please anticipate delays. Through traffic will be detoured around the work zone to Main Street, Cedar Ravine Road, Marshall Way, Corker Street, and South Washington Street.

Motorists are advised to slow down, follow the direction of traffic control, and allow extra time when traveling in this area. The City of Placerville sincerely appreciates your cooperation and patience while we complete this project.

Please contact the Placerville Engineering Department with any questions (530) 642-5250. Updates will be provided on the City's project website: www.cityofplacerville.org/thompson-paving

🐝 Seeing thousands of bees in Placerville? Don’t panic—help is free!

It is officially spring swarm season across California. This is a completely natural process where a honey bee colony splits and looks for a new home. You might suddenly see a large cluster of bees hanging out in a tree, on a fence, or even on a porch. While it can look intimidating, swarming bees are actually at their most docile because they have no hive or honey to protect.

If you see a swarm in the Placerville area, you don’t need to call animal control or emergency dispatch. Instead, connect with Swarmed!

👉 What to do:
Keep a safe distance and leave them alone.
Visit https://beeswarmed.org/ to report the swarm.
A local beekeeper will be dispatched to safely move them to a secure new home.

An official satellite partner of the UC Davis California Master Beekeeper Program, Swarmed works directly with local beekeepers to safely relocate honey bee swarms at zero cost to residents.
