Everyone knows that school zones have been a hands free zone for a few years now and the new law LOUISIANA REVISED STATUTE 32:59 STATES: Louisiana's hands-free driving law, primarily enacted through House Bill 519 (Act 288) and codified under Louisiana Revised Statute (R.S.) 32:59, bans holding or physically supporting a wireless device while driving on public roads, effective January 1, 2026, allowing only hands-free use (Bluetooth, speakerphone, mounted) for calls, GPS, or apps, with exceptions for reporting emergencies, and carries fines starting at $100 (more in school/work zones).
Key Provisions of R.S. 32:59
Prohibition: Drivers cannot hold, support, text, scroll, or use any function of a wireless device in hand while operating a vehicle.
Hands-Free Allowed: Use via Bluetooth, speakerphone, or mounted devices is permitted, but touching the phone to initiate functions is allowed.
Applies Everywhere: The law covers all public roads, including when stopped at traffic lights or signs.
Emergency Exceptions: Using a device to report crashes, emergencies, or hazards is permitted.
Enforcement: Beginning January 1, 2026, officers issue tickets for violations, which are secondary offenses (can only stop you if you're violating another law first).
So if you have your cellphone in your hand whether your using it or just holding it is against the law and you can receive a ticket for that offense!!!!
