The snow and wind continues here in Vermont. As temperatures drop today, please keep an eye on dogs, cats and other animals exposed to the wind.

Be mindful of wind-exposure frostbite, as temps will be near zero and winds will continue to gust above 50 mph this evening. Please protect your pets and farm animals... and help them survive the extreme conditions. (I'm shutting in my chickens.)

Especially for dogs (from several sources) -

A dog outside in blowing snow is likely experiencing discomfort and could be at risk of hypothermia, especially if it's a small breed or not well-suited to cold weather, as the wind chills can quickly lower their body temperature; it's best to bring them inside immediately and provide warmth with a towel or blanket if they are exposed for any significant period in such conditions.

Key points to consider:

Breed matters: Some breeds like Huskies are naturally adapted to cold weather, but even they should be monitored closely in severe snowstorms.

Protective gear: Consider a dog coat or booties to protect their paws from the cold and snow.

Short outings: If your dog must go outside in blowing snow, keep the time outdoors brief and focused on necessary activities like relieving themselves.

Signs of distress: Watch for shivering, whining, lethargy, or seeking shelter, which could indicate your dog is too cold.

Shelter access: If leaving your dog outside for any period, ensure they have access to a well-insulated doghouse that is protected from the wind.

Important Notice: The state is assuring us that driveway damage will be at least part way reimbursed if a Disaster is declared.

You will be reimbursed only IF the damaged driveway in question is the sole access from a private residence to the public road (no emergency vehicles could reach you, and you couldn't get out).

You must document in order to be reimbursed. Keep photos, receipts, descriptions from *Before* and *After*. The more the better. Try to keep track.

The same goes for loss of home, apartment, belongings, car, trailer etc. in the flood. Document... Document... Document.

If you had applicable homeowner's, renter's or auto insurance, File A Claim Now. (Even if you think you will be refused.) That refusal letter, in hand, will actually speed your FEMA claim when the time comes.

WASTE REMOVAL UPDATE. Plainfield moves now toward getting a waste-removal contract with the state. Unfortunately this will take a few weeks to get ready.

Unlike last year, there will be *no roadside pickup* in 2024. We just don't have enough roadsides left. We will announce a central sorted-waste drop location when it's ready.

Separate out your Hazardous Waste and take it to the Plainfield Hazardous Waste drop now... just past the Rec Field parking lot... on Recreation Field Road (see photo).

Flood-caused Plainfield Hazardous Waste ONLY.

Meanwhile - Remove all wet, damaged and destroyed waste from your building to somewhere accessible. (This helps you prevent mold everywhere.) Cleaning, stripping down and de-mold help are becoming available now. Check in at the Plainfield Disaster Recovery (802) 227-2660 to find out when crews are around.

You've all been through a lot, and almost no one here was spared. It has been extremely hard and sometimes overwhelming.

If anyone in Plainfield wants mental health support, please text me about the new walk-in service here... to meet and talk with a professional helper.

And the WCMHS 802-229-0591 crisis help line is being answered 24/7 (sometimes a 10-minute delay). Be sure to ask for screeners if you want in-person help, or for tele-health if you're o.k. with that. Call "988" also for other mental health resources.

My cell (text) number is on the town website. We are getting in-person help at a location in Plainfield starting today, for a few hours a day and perhaps most days of the week. Let me know if you need directions.

I've just received a flood-potential alert from Vermont Emergency Management. Please check your culverts and have an emergency destination to leave for (and a go-kit packed) if you live in the flood plain and might get cut off.

"With the potential for flash flooding tomorrow and main river flooding on Thursday, please take today to make sure your citizens are aware of possible threats and have plans if they need to relocate. Please check any local summer camps in your area to make sure they have plans as well.

Also, ensure your infrastructure is ready, cleaning culverts and catch basins, for example."

Plainfield's Emergency Operations Center at our Town Hall will open if I receive work of evacuations or local road closures. The phone numbers there are 454-1286 and 322-5019.

Call my cell (on town website) if you are uncertain what to do, and call 911 if you face any immediate danger and need assistance.

Forecast high temperatures and humidity continue to climb... see earlier advisories and avoid being outdoors.

• Retreat to the coolest room in the house if you can. Open windows at night and close up windows early before it gets hot.
• If overheated swab forehead, neck and shoulders with cool water, or take a cool shower or bath.
• Watch out for elder neighbors, children in the sun and animals without shade. Provide plenty of water, and avoid leaving any child or pet in a car (even briefly)
• Call 911 if you are red-faced, faint and disoriented, or if someone passes out.

HIGH HEAT WARNING - starting Monday and most extreme on Tues., Wed. and Thurs. Daytime temps in the 90s, nights in the high 60s. Hints... including about medication... are below.

• Cool you homes at night by opening windows, then close them up early in the morning to trap cool air inside.
• Use A/C (if you have it) and have a "cool room" where you can retreat if you get overheated, or to the basement. Sponge your forehead with cold water, and take a cold shower if you feel heat-stress coming on.
• Drink water often and make sure others do too (especially young people and elders).
• Go outdoors only when necessary. If you must work outdoors wear loose clothing and a hat, take frequent breaks and come indoors for water.
• Check medications for heat sensitivities (see chart) and move them to your coolest room.

Plainfield will have a cooling center as of late June, and this week the Cutler Library (when open) has A/C. For now do your best and if there is a heat-related emergency... call 911 right away.

Heads up on solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) - PUBLIC FORUM Wednesday.

Plainfield's Hazard Mitigation Committee is holding a special meeting on Wednesday, June 5 at 7 p.m. (Town Hall) to educate and to strategize what we might do... if a massive CME is thrown out from the Sun in the next week or two.

One of the biggest flares in recent history erupted from the Sun last week but fortunately from the back side, facing away.

Now that same sunspot has just about arrived back at an Earth-facing position... and is still spitting out big flares. A damaging CME could cost us our power, our Internet and GPS for weeks or months... so come by and help us sort it out.

Note: Guilty sunspot 3697 is now so large you can see it with eclipse glasses.

"X" class solar flares are the biggest kind... and Sunspot 3697 has sent out bunches of them including those of the big solar storm (and auroras) a couple of weeks ago. It's back.

Today's X flare marks the 50th such flare in this solar cycle... and we still have 2-3 years to go before it ends. (Last solar cycle #24 had an X-flare total of 50 for the entire 7 years... so this cycle #25 is already way more active!)

05/11/2024

Solar storm follow-up: NOAA reports that G5 and G4 storming continues (after this morning's two X-flares, and will do so again on Sunday the 12th when two groups of incoming CMEs will merge as they reach Earth.

They note disruptions in GPS, radio communications and other services. I checked and see that Spectrum had multiple outages between 8 am and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The new big X 5.8 flare last night has been analyzed and portions of its CME are Earth-directed but not all. Meanwhile, yet another X -flare today (X1.2) was produced from the same hyper-active sunspot complex. G5 solar storm levels again were reached in the early a.m. We don't often see CMEs pile up on one another like this.

This is an extremely rare event. Global impacts are still o.k. and most systems are surviving, although something usually breaks during similar events. Later today we may experience other issues... and certainly more auroras tonight.

A major solar storm is underway - possibly worse than the last one in 2003. Multiple major flares followed by Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are arriving. And a new super-sized X5.8 flare just launched from the Sun toward Earth this evening... also with a CME.

Expect possible disruptions Saturday to power, communications, GPS and other services. Charge your phones - and make sure you have water on hand if you pump your own well.

04/04/2024

Regional power (GMP) is out as of about 1:30 p.m. Thursday. There is no word when it will be restored as a large area of Vermont is without power. Good luck to everyone.

Also - notified this morning that power lines were down across Route 214 between Plainfield and North Montpelier. Please consider an alternative route.
