When a hen is broody she goes into a transe-like state of focus that is hard to break. I have six silkie ladies hugging some wooden eggs with such peaceful determination to hatch my trickery that Buddhist monks might be envious. Four of them have been in a girlfriend gaggle, huddled in this state for nearly a month now. And the delight I receive by delivering to them some newly hatched puffs of love is hard to describe. They know exactly what this little basket means and they giggle and purr like kittens when I swap the contents for their faux-embryos. I's up there with being the tooth fairy, maybe even better. BTW, we grow dandelions so the bees to have meals early in the spring when not much else in in bloom. And today lunch will be shade-ish grown dandelion leaves, portobello mushrooms, onions, and cannelini beans sauteed in fat from North Country corn-cob-smoked, certified-humane bacon (discount code SmokeyJoe or SmokyJoe..i forget). nutritious and delicious. Dandelion greens are not so tasty when they are old or in the hot sun. Yum. Yum and YUM.
