Pictured is the Fifth Annual Fishing Derby, held on May 22, 1965. For over 20 years, the derby took place in the pond behind Cook School. It began in 1960 and was sponsored by the school PTA, Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, Police Athletic League, Recreation Commission, and other local organizations. The pond was cleaned and stocked with fish prior to the event. The contest was open to children ages 5 through 13. They had to supply their own fishing equipment, including hooks and bait. Fish were caught, landed, and carried to the measuring station by the child who caught it. Winners were determined by the size of the fish, rather than the weight. In 1965, 6-year-old Russell Frank caught the winning fish - a 12" catfish. The grand prize was a bicycle. By 1987, the fishing derby had moved to Cedarbrook Park. This Polaroid photograph was used in the Courier News article about the derby.

๐ŸŒŸ Luckily, the librarians in our Children's Library were there to remind him of all the great things we do for Plainfield's children and teens.
