Thursday Faves
https://plainsborolibrary.kanopy.com/video/big-night

Each Thursday we'll be making recommendations of some of the best books, music, movies, and more that you can still get from the library. Just because you're at home doesn't mean our media can't come to you.

A lot of people are starving for things like big family meals and food other than leftovers. Big Night is the film that will satiate your appetite.

Filled with feasts and family, this is the film version of comfort food. Plus it's a treat watching Tony Shalhoub and Stanley Tucci bounce off each other.

Each Tuesday we'll share something to try and help you at out home. Be it a digital tool to communicate, or just a practice to help keep a bit of sanity.

I'm going to let you all in on a little secret: Bon Appetit's Gourmet Makes is one of my favorite web shows. Each pastry chef Claire Saffitz takes a familiar junk food and attempts to reverse engineer it from scratch. Over the course of the show she's tackled everything from Skittles to Cheetos to Peeps. Sometimes the recipes seem easy enough to reproduce, often times they are convoluted and absurd (she makes Pringles one chip at a time). But they are always a delight to watch.

Each Monday we'll share a way to get out of the house and see somewhere new.

The Louvre is an astounding institution. The building itself is worth a visit, in person or virtual, having been created as a fortress by the French king Philippe Auguste. And the untold treasures inside are priceless.

Visit here to go on virtual tours by wings, or get room-by-room descriptions.

Just because you're at home doesn't mean our media can't come to you.

Only season one is currently on Hoopla, but it's just too good to keep quiet about. And if you have Netflix, they'll be adding the rest soon!

Ostensibly a kid's show, Avatar: The Last Airbender is just a brilliant piece of storytelling. The characters are compelling and all have the full arcs they deserve. The world is slowly built up over the course of 3 seasons, all leading up to one of the most compelling series finales I can recall ever seeing.

Maybe I have a soft spot for this show because I started book club with one of the novels. Maybe it's because Essie Davis is wonderful in everything she's ever been in. And maybe that fast-talking 20s dialog and spot-on period fashion hit a sweet spot. Or it could be all of that.

Whatever the reason, I'm someone that doesn't normally go in for mystery shows but how been completely won over by the charm of this Australian production.

If you're looking for a quick way to see some friends and family with no time limit on meetings, this is it. Like Zoom but a little simpler and a lot more free. There's no sign-up, just start a room and invite people in. There are apps for phones and tablets, or just use your browser. Group chat, video conferencing, and meeting recordings are all available.

This week we're going a little off the beaten path. The Winchester Mystery House is an architectural oddity. Built piece by piece from the ground up, this house contains features that don't line up, or overlap to create dead ends and hidden rooms.

There is now a video tour online, which is unprecedented as the museum doesn't even allow photography for in-person visitors!

Just because you're at home doesn't mean our media can't come to you.

https://plainsborolibrary.kanopy.com/video/ex-machina-0

Alex Garland's weird and jaw-dropping debut, Ex Machina, is an amazing piece of film. While technically taking place in a locked home, it's not a story about claustrophobia. Rather, it's an intense look at what it means to be a person, and how well we can truly know each other. Part thriller, part scifi visual feast, and a touch of horror, this is well worth your time.

If you're anything like me, you're itching to get out and go to an amusement park. Whether it's for the churros or the thrill rides, I love theme parks and am really feeling their absence at the moment.

While not as good, a alternative for the moment are these 360° ride videos. Scroll around on your phone to see all around. If you have VR, or even Google Cardboard, you can strap on your screen and "ride" the rides!
