🌳 PARK SPOTLIGHT: THURL COOK PARK 🌳

We’re kicking off our City of Plainwell Park Spotlight series with Thurl Cook Park!

The park’s newest attraction is a brand-new play structure offering children even more opportunities to climb, slide and play! This exciting improvement was made possible in part through two generous grants totaling $20,000 from the Anna R. Pipp Foundation. We are incredibly grateful for the foundation’s continued investment in the Plainwell community! 💚

Accessible from Oak Street or the south end of Glenview Circle, this five-acre park is located just a few blocks northeast of Sherwood Park. Thurl Cook Park also features:

🛝 A brand-new play structure
🛷 A 100-foot lighted sledding hill
🐾 Dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs
🏓 Newly resurfaced pickleball courts
🧺 A covered picnic pavilion
🚻 Restroom facilities
🌳 Open green space for outdoor recreation

From summer playtime and pickleball to dog-park visits and winter sledding, Thurl Cook Park offers something for every season!

PRESS RELEASE – FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH

Plainwell, Michigan – September 1, 2026

The Plainwell Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal traffic crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV that occurred this afternoon in downtown Plainwell.

Plainwell Public Safety personnel responded to the crash and immediately began providing emergency medical care. The operator of the motorcycle was transported by Beacon Health Plainwell Area EMS Ambulance to Beacon Health System for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, the motorcyclist later died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Plainwell Public Safety was assisted by Otsego Police Department, Allegan County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, Gun Plain Fire Department, Beacon Health Plainwell Area EMS, Plainwell Department of Public Works, Allegan County Central Dispatch, & Michigan Department of Transportation. Allegan County Sheriff’s Office provided additional invaluable assistance with accident reconstruction.

The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation. No additional information regarding the individuals involved is being released at this time pending completion of appropriate notifications and the ongoing investigation.

WITNESSES SOUGHT

Plainwell Public Safety is asking anyone who witnessed the crash, observed the motorcycle or SUV immediately prior to the collision, or who may have relevant video footage from the downtown area to contact the Plainwell Department of Public Safety at 269-685-9858 or Detective John Varley at 269-720-0621.

We especially encourage anyone who witnessed the collision to contact us, as even seemingly minor details may assist investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Plainwell Public Safety extends its condolences to the family and friends of the individual who lost their life in this tragic incident.

Additional information will be released when appropriate as the investigation continues.

UPDATE
The downtown area is fully opened up again.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – DOWNTOWN PLAINWELL 🚨

The downtown Plainwell area is currently CLOSED to traffic while police, fire, and medical personnel work at the scene of a traffic accident.

Motorists are asked to avoid the downtown area and use an alternate route. Please do not attempt to drive around barricades or enter the closed area so emergency personnel can safely operate.

We will provide an update as soon as the scene is cleared and downtown Plainwell is reopened to traffic.

Emergency Warning Siren Testing Completed

PLAINWELL, MI — September 1, 2026 — The City of Plainwell Department of Public Safety has completed today's testing of the City's outdoor emergency warning siren.

During the testing process, we believe we identified the issue responsible for the recent unintended siren activations and have taken steps to address it. At this time, no additional testing or planned siren activations are anticipated.

City personnel will continue to monitor the system to ensure it is operating properly and to determine whether any additional action is necessary.

Now that testing has concluded, residents should once again treat any activation of the outdoor emergency warning siren as an actual emergency and take appropriate precautions.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents while we worked to identify the cause of the recent activations. We also appreciate everyone's cooperation during today's testing.

Should any additional issues occur, the City will provide updated information through our official communication channels.

Emergency Warning Siren Testing Today

PLAINWELL, MI — September 1, 2026 — The City of Plainwell Department of Public Safety will be conducting testing of the City's outdoor emergency warning siren today, September 1, 2026, as part of our ongoing efforts to diagnose recent unintended siren activations.

During this testing, residents may hear the emergency warning siren activate multiple times throughout the day. These activations are part of the testing process and do not indicate an emergency unless accompanied by additional emergency notifications or instructions from Public Safety.

City personnel are working to identify the cause of the recent unintended activations and ensure the warning system operates properly and reliably.

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern caused by the testing and appreciate the community's patience while we work to resolve the issue.

If an actual emergency occurs during the testing period, the City will provide additional information and instructions through its normal emergency communication channels.

City of Plainwell – Emergency Warning Siren

**PLAINWELL, MI — August 31, 2026** — The City of Plainwell Department of Public Safety is aware of recent instances in which the City's outdoor emergency warning siren has activated unexpectedly when no emergency warning was initiated by Public Safety personnel or Allegan County Central Dispatch.

We understand that activation of an emergency warning siren can cause concern for residents and visitors. We are currently working to identify the cause of these unintended activations and determine what corrective action may be necessary.

At this time, the cause of the activations has not been determined. Public Safety personnel are reviewing the warning system and its associated equipment and controls to determine whether the issue is related to equipment, communications, controls, or another component of the system.

**Unless otherwise announced through official City or Public Safety communications, residents should continue to treat activation of the emergency warning siren as a potential emergency and take appropriate precautions.** An unintended activation in the past does not mean that a future activation should be disregarded.

When an activation occurs and there is no emergency, the City will make every reasonable effort to provide information through its official communication channels as quickly as possible.

We appreciate the community's patience while we work to diagnose and correct this issue. The reliability of our emergency warning system is important, and we want to ensure the system operates as intended when it is needed.

Temporary Downtown Parking Restrictions for Street Work

PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN — August 26, 2026 — The City of Plainwell is advising residents, visitors, and downtown businesses of temporary parking restrictions scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2026, to allow crews to complete necessary street work in the downtown area.

Downtown Parking Restrictions

Parking will be prohibited in the marked parking spaces along the main downtown corridor from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Vehicles must be removed from the affected parking spaces before 7:00 a.m. to allow crews to safely and efficiently complete the scheduled work.

Any vehicle remaining in a posted or marked no-parking area at 7:00 a.m. will be subject to towing at the owner's expense. Vehicle owners are asked to pay close attention to temporary no-parking signs, cones, and other markings identifying the affected areas.

The City anticipates that the work may be completed before 5:00 p.m. If parking can safely return to normal earlier, the City will issue an update notifying the public that the restrictions have been lifted.

Downtown Businesses Remain Open and Accessible

Downtown businesses will remain open and accessible throughout the project. All other streets will remain open, and customers are encouraged to use side streets and public parking lots located behind downtown businesses.

The City encourages residents and visitors to continue supporting our downtown businesses during the temporary parking restrictions.

We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation while this work is completed and ask motorists to follow all temporary traffic and parking restrictions so crews can complete the project safely and as quickly as possible.
