Plano's dog parks are closed today due to soggy conditions from recent rainfall. Thankfully, the dry weather and sunshine will help things dry out this week. The majority of the water has receded with the exception of low-lying areas.

Crews are still active at cleaning mud and debris from parks and trails as they become accessible. Always use caution when accessing the trails, as there could be some areas that crews have not made it to as of yet. Thank you! of Plano, Texas Government

The stormy weather we experienced this week caused one of North Texas' true treasures to fall. This act of nature has left us heartbroken. The Quadricentennial Bur Oak, located in Bob Woodruff Park was widely known as the oldest and largest tree in the City of Plano and North Texas.

The scientific name for the tree is Quercus macrocarpa. It stood 90 feet high and had a circumference of 15 and a half feet. Think of all the history this tree has stood witness to. It was here when the U.S. constitution was signed in 1787.

Arborists believe the giant Bur Oak was more than four centuries old.

Our Parks and Recreation Department is asking the public to stay away from the area due to unsafe conditions. Farewell old friend. 🌳

10/26/2023

Looks like we received more than 4 inches of rain here overnight. Please use caution when visiting Plano parks over the next few days. Located within low-elevation flood plains, these parks are doing their job containing floodwaters as creeks crest.

If you do go out, make sure you are properly attired and are extra careful when walking on the concrete trails, as standing water causes slippery conditions.

The best thing to do is let Mother Nature run its course. You can also check the status of Plano’s dog parks and athletic fields during rain events by visiting https://rainoutline.com/search/dnis/9722102936. City of Plano, Texas Government

Did you know the first playground constructed at Big Lake Park was built mostly by nearby residents? Residents living near Christie Elementary School collected money and materials to create what they called an "adventure playground" made mostly out of wood and used tires. Despite its simplicity, the new playground was a huge hit among the neighborhood kids and a win for the city.

The playground has taken several other forms throughout the years to get it where it is today, and it all started with a group of residents and a partnership with us and Plano Fire-Rescue. Plan your trip to this historic play place by visiting our Parks & Trails page at planoparks.org! 🤸

During the process of restriping the courts at Carpenter Park Recreation Center's south gym, our contractors encountered unexpected challenges that have led to delays in completing the work to our satisfaction. As of now, we anticipate that the south gymnasium will remain closed for one additional week, reopening on Friday, October 27.

We are working closely with our contractors to expedite any necessary repairs and complete the work as quickly as possible. THIS JUST IN: City of Plano Receives National Award for Parks and Recreation Excellence for Fifth Time!! 🏆 🥳

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) at its annual conference in Dallas today announced the City of Plano’s Parks and Recreation Department as the 2023 National Gold Medal Award, marking the fifth such recognition for the Department.

The prestigious award recognizes agencies that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and community engagement.

“Winning the National Gold Medal for a fifth time is an amazing feeling,” Director Ron Smith said. “Throughout the years, we have remained strategic, thoughtful and deliberate, re-affirming the Department’s commitment to delivering outstanding services, facilities and programs to Plano residents every day. This award also reflects our efforts to help achieve and maintain City Council’s vision for Plano, in which all residents experience an unparalleled quality of life.”

The Department received its first Gold Medal Award in its population class in 1979, with three more awarded in 1987, 1997, and 2015. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials.

Accredited since 1994 and ranked #1 in Texas by the Trust for Public Land, Plano Parks and Recreation provided more than 7,000 health, wellness and recreational programs in 2022, enrolling nearly 58,000 participants of all ages, backgrounds, income levels, and abilities. Its collaborations with schools, businesses and non-profits have also cultivated community-wide advocacy for quality parks and recreation in Plano. Integrated work order and asset management software has also enabled the Department to track work orders, inspections and community requests, resulting in faster response rates and cost savings.

For more information on the Gold Medal Awards, visit www.nrpa.org/goldmedal or www.aapra.org.

Great Blue Heron at Carpenter Park. I wonder what she is thinking.
Good morning Plano Parks & Recreation!! Any chance this “puddle” at Bob Woodruff will be fixed soon?? Lol my WHITE Great Pyrenees was asking….
Hi! Can anyone steer me in the direction of how to report a problem at a park!?!? Just in case someone official sees this- there is a wasp nest in one of the play structures at Liberty park! Thank you!!!
Hello friends at Plano Parks and Rec.

I live in East Plano close to the Cottonwood Greenbelt.

It’s a wonderful place to live and in no small part due to the vibrancy of the greenbelt and the feeling of wild nature being so close.

And the trail just added that connects the lower part of the green belt up to the high school and beyond is a wonderful and much appreciated enhancement.

I’m wondering if there’s a case to be made though for ceasing mowing in some more swaths near the creek and along the new trail that are lnever used by humans for any kind of recreation and that look so nice and healthy when left to their own natural devices with a variety of wild grasses and so forth.

Thank you for your consideration and I’d be more than happy to take a walking tour with someone from Parks or provide more detail in whatever way would be helpful.
Please help us to find the three involved in the stabbing incident! The hispanic man and hispanic woman are shown in this image released via twitter this evening.
Are there any public pickleball courts in Plano?
Plano Parks & Recreation you missed the call on Saturday at Russell Creek Park by delaying the tournament for 5 hours. We were there from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm, the fields were dry. Play should have been allowed to start at 10:00. My family (team/coaches) will NOT be back to any of your fields again. This means your parks may have less tournaments since we have let the event company know we will not play in any tournaments at your parks. Your area hotels will have less families stay, area restaurants less team dinners, area businesses that sell needed supplies will all have lost business opportunities if events pull away from your facilities. This is not a small group, there are usually 150 teams in town for this one tournament. This is not a one time thing, you have done this year after year.
Whoever is jogging/running on the indoor track, please remember to pass on the left! A male high schooler and I collided because of that high schooler passing on the right as I was attempting to get out of the way.
