Plano Animal Services urges Caution after Recent Rabies Case

Plano Animal Services Director Jamey Cantrell reports a bat tested positive for rabies this week after it came into contact with a resident in the area of W. 15th Street and Custer Road. Rabies is a viral disease occurring in warm-blooded animals and can be contracted by humans through bites from infected animals.

“This positive test highlights the importance of being cautious around wildlife and always reporting any contact with them,” said Cantrell. “It also shows why it’s so important to keep all pet vaccinations current, especially rabies. There is no way to predict when a pet may come into contact with a wild animal.”

Texas law and Plano city ordinances require animals receive rabies inoculations along with subsequent booster shots for the duration of the animal’s life.

The Plano Animal Shelter does not routinely test wild animals for rabies unless they have had contact with a person or pet and are one of five high risk non-domestic animals: bats, foxes, skunks, coyotes and raccoons.

This particular incident involved a resident who had contact with a bat. The bat was ill and died before Animal Services could pick it up. Due to the nature of the situation, the animal was tested and subsequently found to be rabid.

Rabies is preventable. The Shelter hosts low-cost rabies vaccination clinic on the third Friday of every month. The next clinic is on Friday, September 18th. We urge all pet-owners to take advantage of this opportunity for their pet’s health and the health of their human family. View more vaccination options at https://bit.ly/3msz37s.

The 2020 Clear the Shelters event placed a record 265 pets with forever families between August 8 and 29! Most of these adoptions occurred before fees were waived. We appreciate our staff and dedicated volunteers who helped us navigate an extended event and ensured it was conducted safely for everyone involved. The national sponsor of Clear the Shelters is Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

Thanks to all who adopted pets and became part of our extended Shelter family. Still interested in a pet? Check out our furry friends at share.plano.gov/adoptablepets.

Kitten Storm Drain Rescue

A good Samaritan reported that a kitten had been stuck in a storm drain for a few days. The Animal Services Officer found that the kitten had managed to pick the deepest drain possible - about a six foot drop. She spent about 45 minutes laying on the hot street and using her phone camera to look down into the sewer so she could view the kitten as she tried to capture it. She was finally able to get her out and found that she was dehydrated, anemic from a flea infestation, suffering from an upper respiratory infection and hungry. The kitten actually fainted when she was rescued. She’s since been bathed, fed, started on medications and is doing better in her foster home. Thank you to the good Samaritan and our awesome officer for their help!

❤️Adoption Success Story💙
Meet Pearl, she was adopted Saturday and is already making herself at home!
"She came straight home with us Saturday afternoon and crashed out on the couch with her new dad for nap time.
She has been so loving from the minute we met her. I can't imagine how she wasn't taken home sooner by anyone but thankful she was available for us. She's so smart too! So happy we decided to stop in when we did. We loved your facility and couldn't be any happier with the new addition to our family!"

FOUND: Cockatoo aka Galah 9/15/20 Addison TX 75001 Dallas County NOT FOR ADOPTION Sharing info to help find pet bird owner/s PLEASE Share Per Foster/Adopter: As of yesterday I adopted a ‘lost’ Galah. She (I think) has obviously been loved, is super tame, trusting and sweet. As much as I want to keep her all to myself I realize that that her owner may be looking for her and completely heartbroken without her. She has 2 distinct identifying things: the color and number off of her foot band and a ‘birth mark’. Please let me know if this is your baby, and if you want her back. She was found hiding in someone’s flower pot in Addison on Tuesday. IF you believe this is your lost bird, please have proof of ownership [band ID, vet and/or sale records, photos etc] and contact via facebook pvt msg link below ASAP: Avian Angel 😇 Dee Boswell https://www.facebook.com/dianna.boswell bird parrot rose breasted cockatoo galah
Mavvy wanted to drop in and say hello! We got him in February ❤️❤️
When my bf and I first adopted him, we were told he might be a challenge since he was a feral and the least social one... but we didn’t back down 😉 2 weeks later—he is the most active, social, loving, curious kitten 🥰 On day 3 of being with us, he was no longer hiding under the bed and wanted to sleep with us ❤️ And being comfortable around guests didn’t take long either! Just wanted to give an update on formerly known as Stetson... now named Eli 😊
Please help our family get our Freckles back home. She was dropped off at a neighbors house before we went out of town. They left front door open and she ran out looking for us. She goes by the name Freckles. Very timid and does not bite. Sweet dog and very timid. Pomeranian cream color mid size. Please help her get back home safely. 214 802-3434 972 333-6959 She was lost on July 16, 2019 at 7:00 evening.
Found in the Flatiron District of Austin Ranch on 7/11/20. Because it borders Plano & The Colony we wanted to post here to let everyone know this dog is at The Colony Animals Services as of 7/12/20 and is on a 3 day stray hold.
A few days ago was our 1 year gotchya anniversary with our sweet Sadie girl. She was returned to you guys after a year with another family and I saw her picture on your site and knew she had to be ours. Thank you guys for all you do!!!!! We love you Plano animal shelter ❤️ 🐶 🐱
I wish I could adopt her but look at Bella, she's been there so long! What a beautiful dog!☺️
Pulled from a sewage drain at 5 weeks old by Plano Animal Shelter, and adopted by his furever family! Today he celebrates his 10th birthday! 🎂🎉💐🌹🎈💜
Adopted "Sleven" now named Yami from yall November 2019, and I am so happy i did. She has such a sweet personality and is so well behaved for a husky. She gets along great with my other Husky Akira and she has fit in perfectly with our little family. We would do anything for her! Thank you for letting us bring her into our family.
