This month was born from a riot.

Fifty-seven years ago this June, the patrons of a gay bar in Greenwich Village fought back against police who had come to arrest them for the crime of existing. There were no parades. There were no rainbow logos. There was only the refusal to keep being beaten without fighting back.

Pride started as a protest. It is still a protest.

This year, it is a protest against an administration that is trying to legislate trans Americans out of public life. Against a culture war that has decided the most vulnerable kids in the country should be the next acceptable target. Against the lie that the people in power are protecting families when they tell a child their existence is up for debate.

We will not accept it.

The America we believe in has room for every American. The civic creed our country was founded on — that we are united not by blood or by ancestry but by shared convictions — applies to every person, including the ones the right would prefer to disappear.

Happy Pride. Get loud. Get organized. Get to work.

There are two ideas of America fighting for the soul of this country.

One says America belongs to people who look a certain way, pray a certain way, came from a certain place. The other is the one Jon Ossoff just named:

“Our national greatness flows not through our blood or our genes, but through our ideas. Americans are not a race, we’re a people united not by ethnicity, but by our shared convictions.”

This is the older tradition. Lincoln at Gettysburg. Douglass on the Fourth of July. King in Selma. The idea that what makes someone American isn’t their bloodline — it’s whether they believe in the bargain.

Every generation has to defend that idea. Ours is no exception.

The U.S. Constitution is a wholly secular document. It contains no mention of Christianity or Jesus Christ. In fact, the Constitution refers to religion only twice in the First Amendment, which bars laws “respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” and in Article VI, which prohibits “religious tests” for public office. Both of these provisions are evidence that the country was not founded as officially Christian.
