Edith Farnsworth House is thrilled to formally announce our next exhibit: Cristina Kahlo: Líneas de Luz y Sombra. Curated by Mayra C. Palafox.

Cristina Kahlo, photographer and grandniece of Frida Kahlo, continues her family’s artistic legacy through her distinctive eye for architecture, light, and form. As part of our year-long focus on Mexican Modernism, her work comes to the Edith Farnsworth House in a curated exhibition that highlights the bold lines, dramatic contrasts, and modernist spaces that inspired and housed figures such as Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Diego Rivera. The exhibition will also feature photographs of the Edith Farnsworth House, offering a unique dialogue between Mexican Modernism and one of the most iconic works of modern architecture.

Join us for the opening at Edith Farnsworth House on June 20th. Reserve your spot at https://edithfarnsworthhouse.org/upcoming-events/

This Preservation Month, as we reflect on the enduring promise that “all people are created equal,” we would be remiss not to recognize Dr. Edith Farnsworth.

Remembered as the patron of Edith Farnsworth House, Dr. Farnsworth’s legacy extends far beyond the house itself. She was a respected physician and researcher, poet, translator, and an influential force behind what became one of the most celebrated works in modern architecture. Since the site’s formal renaming in 2021, we have been honored to continue uncovering and sharing more of her story.

Today, visitors can experience the house closer to how Dr. Farnsworth knew it. As part of our latest restoration project, the primavera wood core has been carefully revarnished to its original tone, restoring its warmth and luster while helping to conceal decades of flood damage.

This May, Preservation Month takes on a new meaning. As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we’re looking to the places that bring its most powerful promise to life, that “all people are created equal,” and to the preservationists making sure those places endure.

At Edith Farnsworth House, this work takes form through Farnsworth Forward, our 2026–27 initiative marking 75 years of the Edith Farnsworth House. Through exhibitions and programs, we are inviting new voices and broader audiences to engage with the continuing influence and evolving meaning of modernism.

This year’s focus, Mexican Modernism, includes three exhibitions centered on Mexican design, craft, and cultural identity. Situated within a region with a significant Latino population, Farnsworth House offers an important setting for conversations about heritage, representation, and contemporary meaning-making in dialogue with architectural history.

Next year, we will continue this work in collaboration with Afro-Latino and African American artists, designers, and cultural practitioners as we develop future exhibitions and public programs.
