California Efforts to Reduce Jail Population During Covid Come to End as Crime Rises

Who’s shocked with this? You release criminal from jail after they commit crimes early and then you don’t put them in jail when they do, PLUS you say you’re not going to prosecute them if they steal less than $600 and you get EXACTLY this! Duh!!!!

San Jose’s mayor says the policy largely failed, as L.A. and San Diego also recently stopped efforts to set zero bail for nonviolent offenses to slow the spread of the virus behind bars.

Bill to Automatically Remove Criminal Records Finds Some Support in New York

WOW! Wiping away felony records??

“The Clean Slate Act, which is sponsored by state senator Zellnor Myrie, a Democrat who represents parts of Brooklyn, would remove publicly available criminal records for most felonies and misdemeanor crimes after people have completed the terms of their punishments.”

Proposed legislation would erase criminal records of millions in New York and ease the challenge of finding a job, backers say.

Cramer says he's confident inflation will not end up crushing U.S. economy

“The economy’s not going to be wrecked by ruinous inflation, the stock market won’t crash because of government debt,” Cramer said. “I think we’re more likely to see a soft landing for this sonic-booming economy once the supply chain issues are ironed out and the enhanced unemployment benefits expire in September.”

"We may finally have some real inflation, but I don't think their dire predictions of financial catastrophe" will come true, CNBC's Jim Cramer said.

Does the Bill of Rights protect you outside your home?

“The central issue in the latest case is whether the Second Amendment right to “bear arms” extends outside of the home. Sure, you can take your gun from your bedroom to the kitchen, but can you take your gun outside? If the answer is no, then we must ask: Do other constitutional freedoms — from the free exercise of religion to freedom of speech to rights against unreasonable searches and seizures to due process of law — also end as you exit your home? “

Whether the right to bear arms is good or bad policy is beyond the purview of the Supreme Court. Instead, its duty is to establish what the Constitution means and requires.

Summers Sees Worst U.S. Macroeconomic Policy in 40 Years

I’ve been warning this for a long time and what is happening now is only ACCELERATING this problem!

“These are the least responsible fiscal macroeconomic policy we’ve have had for the last 40 years,” Summers said. “It’s fundamentally driven by intransigence on the Democratic left and intransigence and the completely irresponsible behavior in the whole of the Republican Party.”

(Bloomberg) -- Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers warned that the U.S. is suffering from the “least responsible” macroeconomic policy in four decades, pointing the finger at both Democrats and Republicans for creating “enormous” risks. In his latest attack on the recent rush of stimul...

“The surprising results reveal caffeine use does not result in poorer sleep. However, researchers find there are significant changes in the volume of gray matter just in the 10 days with or without caffeine in a person’s system.”

The findings reveal that even consuming caffeine for a short period of time can change the volume of gray matter in the brain.

HOPE IN PLANO POLITICS
In the midst of a polarized election period, something great was achieved last night.

A diverse group of 16 citizens were appointed at the end of 2019 to create a new future for Plano: a new Comprehensive Plan. This group was appointed by all city council members (two each), and represent all aspects of Plano politics and the divide that started with the introduction of the Plano Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan in 2016, the petition to repeal it, and the law suit that followed.

We held 31 meetings, starting January 11, 2020. We had meetings that lasted whole days. We had meetings that lasted into the night. We had to cancel meetings when the COVID-19 pandemic started, but we found ways to continue safely through the pandemic. After a year, on our first 2021 meeting, we reached a deadlock, and there seemed to have been no way forward. The bar was set high--we had to approve a plan with 75% approval rate. At that time, it seemed that we were as fragmented as the city is, and there will be no way to get there.

So, we appointed a subcommittee made of 4 members and a facilitator. Between January and March, the 4 of us met almost weekly to identify the main issues and find a compromise. Something that was done easier at a smaller group, in a smaller room, away from the cameras and formalities.

In late March, we found that compromise, and returned a proposal back to the entire committee. The committee spent a month, through two meetings, to digest those major changes.

But, last night, the entire committee voted on the plan. It didn't get approved by 75% of the members.
IT GOT APPROVED BY 100%!

There is hope for Plano after all!

The new comprehensive plan assures that in issues of planning, building, development, and zoning, the city will be much more transparent, communicate more with its residents, listen to them and take their input seriously, assure that development (of any type) is based only on REAL city-level demand, accept that Plano is almost built out and no significant changes in population or development are anticipated, set a high bar for any exceptions from the plan, considering the benefits of surrounding neighbors (beyond what is mandated by law), and will consider updating the plan regularly in a way that truly involves the community.

While the committee spent over 3,000 hours collectively, and I appreciate the work, effort, passion, input, and time spent by everyone who took part in it, member-volunteers, staff, and consultants, there are two people that I want to recognize the most: Mike Bronsky and Christina Day.

Mike spent more time than any volunteer on the committee. While running his own school, he had to find and pay substitute teachers to take over his duties so he can spend more time with committee work. He was working on the committee every single day.

Christina leads a world-class planning department. While initially it seemed as if all the committee will do is to go over HER plan, she made it OUR plan. She accepted things that, frankly, I didn't think she would. But she, Mike Bell, and their team were very responsive every day of the week (including weekends) and any time of the day to accommodate us and make it OUR plan.

Finally, I wanted to thank the Plano City Council who trusted us with this work.

Onwards!
