Eddie Bernice Johnson was a trailblazing politician whose pivotal work in the fight against hunger will long be remembered.

The retired U.S. representative died Dec. 31 at the age of 88. She was the first African American to serve as chief psychiatric nurse at the Dallas Veterans Administrative Hospital and the first woman in history to lead a major Texas House committee.

Throughout her decades-long career, Johnson sponsored or co-sponsored more than 65 food security bills, and she deeply understood the importance of anti-hunger policy.

With higher costs for everything from milk and meat to utilities and housing, Nikita Hill struggled to purchase the groceries she needed for her three children.

A Navy veteran and Veterans Affairs Department employee, Nikita was referred to one of the North Texas Food Bank’s partner agencies, Soldiers’ Angels, and has been able to participate in a monthly food distribution that helps supplement the groceries she buys. “Groceries are my largest bill, so it’s very hard to feed your children,” says Nikita. “It gives me one less thing to worry about. It means a lot because I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it and now I feel like I have a leg up.”

Nikita is not alone. Throughout the holiday season, the North Texas Food Bank and many of its around 500 partner agencies have seen more neighbors facing hunger than this time last year. In fact, says NTFB Chief External Affairs Officer Erica Yaeger, the food bank now distributes over 15% more food than it did in July.

Over the last 10 years, the Jingle Bell Mistletoe Crew raised more than $500,000 to help provide more than 1.5 million meals for their neighbors facing hunger.

“Don’t ever think that you can’t make a difference for your community no matter what age you are,” said North Texas Food Bank President and CEO Trisha Cunningham.

Stella, Quinn, Trevor and Isabella, the teenagers known as the Mistletoe Crew, started raising money to support others when they were still in elementary school in 2012. Now seniors in high school, the teens have raised over $500,000 for the NTFB through annual mistletoe sales.

And they aren’t done yet.

North Texans can still purchase mistletoe in support of the NTFB Dec. 20-23 at various locations! Read more at https://ow.ly/kawY50QhX8t.

"My family has seen hunger not even a generation ago as my dad was 20 pounds underweight when he came to work in the United States, so I knew hunger relief would be important to me as I considered my legacy.

A legacy captures your life and the lessons learned along the way, or it celebrates things that were most important to you, whether a cause or interest.

For me, legacy is a framework to be given to future generations. Remember, a legacy is not a statistic, but rather a living body of work.

It requires considering how things like kindness, ethics and character will impact your decisions when making material wealth. And it means determining how much time and money you will spend helping others while living your daily life." - Anurag Jain, NTFB Chair Emeritus and Lifetime Board Member
