The Russell Education Foundation Russell Education Foundation has been empowering at-risk youth through education and literacy for 24+ years. Over her more than 30 years of teaching, Mrs.

We’re on a mission to eradicate illiteracy and build stronger communities. Join us today—every child deserves a bright future! The Russell Education Foundation is now in our 18th year of serving low-and-moderate-income students in South Florida. The Russell Reading Program was developed by Twan Russell and his mother, Corliss Russell, a Broward County Public Schools educator who drew upon her

experience in the classroom, realizing what was working for her students and where they and their families needed extra assistance. Russell determined that the key to her students’ successes in all subject areas was a mastery of reading comprehension skills.

When you volunteer with Russell Education Foundation, you do more than help with homework - you become the caring adult who shows up, listens, and cheers students on. In our Russell Reading Rooms and after‑school programs, volunteers help students strengthen reading skills, build confidence, and believe they can succeed in school and beyond.

Whether you’re tutoring, reading stories, or supporting activities, your time creates safe, consistent spaces where at‑risk youth feel seen and supported. Volunteering just a little each week can have a lasting impact on a child’s life and on our mission to open doors for South Florida students.

Summer shouldn’t mean falling behind. At Russell Education Foundation, summer reading is how we help students stay on track and ready for the next school year. Research shows that many children can lose up to a month of reading progress over summer break, with low‑income students facing even greater setbacks. Our eight‑week summer learning program is designed to combat that “summer slide” and keep literacy skills growing.

Through Russell Reading Rooms and summer sessions, students in Broward and Miami‑Dade counties spend their summer days exploring books, building vocabulary, and strengthening comprehension in safe, nurturing spaces. With caring educators, engaging activities, and a focus on grade‑level reading, students return to school more confident, prepared, and excited to learn.

This summer, make reading part of your daily routine and help us keep these programs going for the children who need them most. Your support turns long summer days into opportunities to open books and open doors.

At Russell Education Foundation, reading matters because it shapes everything about a child’s future. Too many students reach the end of third grade without mastering reading, putting them at higher risk of dropping out of school and limiting their opportunities later in life. That’s why our mission is “Opening Books to Open Doors” - empowering students to become successful citizens and leaders.

Through Russell Reading Rooms, afterschool programs, and summer learning, students in Broward and Miami‑Dade counties build foundational literacy skills, strengthen comprehension, and discover the joy of stories with caring teachers and mentors by their side. Every book opened, every new word learned, and every story shared helps students gain confidence, catch up to grade level, and see themselves as capable learners and leaders.

For 25 years, families, schools, and community partners have joined us in proving that when reading matters, everything changes - grades, graduation rates, and the trajectory of a child’s life. Thank you for standing with us to keep reading at the heart of opportunity.

From Russell Reading Rooms and summer learning to mentoring and outreach, every tutoring session, every page turned, and every encouraging word has helped students move toward grade‑level reading, graduation, and brighter futures.

Because of partners, donors, volunteers, and caring educators, thousands of students in Broward and Miami‑Dade have gained the skills and confidence to become high school and college graduates, working professionals, and engaged parents in their communities. We’re proud of the first 20,000 and we’re committed to reaching the next 20,000 with hope, literacy, and love.

For more than 25 years, Russell Education Foundation has been opening books to open doors for South Florida students. Founded in 1999 by former Miami Dolphins linebacker Twan Russell and his late mother, Corliss, the organization began as the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, built on a legacy of love, literacy, and life skills for struggling readers.

What started as a single reading and life‑skills program has grown into a network of Russell Reading Rooms, high‑quality afterschool and summer learning programs, and mentoring and outreach that now serves more than 20,000 students and their families across Broward and Miami‑Dade counties. Guided by the mission “Opening Books to Open Doors,” REF works every day to close the achievement gap and ensure that every child becomes a confident reader with a brighter future.

Today, we continue Corliss Russell’s vision: tackling illiteracy, empowering youth, and proving that when children learn to love reading, they unlock opportunities far beyond the classroom. Join us in sharing this story and helping more students turn the page toward success.

This Fourth of July, we’re celebrating a quieter kind of independence-the kind
a child finds the moment a book opens and a door opens with it.

For 25+ years, that’s been our whole mission.
Opening books to open doors.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at the Russell Education Foundation.
