Kids are messy. When it comes time to clean their car seat, make sure you check the manual first. Harsh chemicals and soaking can damage straps and affect how well the seat protects a child in a crash. Seats can be tricky to take apart and put back together. Can’t find the manual? Many manufacturers make them available for download on their websites.

Congratulations—you chose the right car seat and installed it correctly! Now it’s time to register your car seat with the manufacturer to receive recalls and safety notices so your child can remain safe.

Registering your seat makes sense: It gives the manufacturer the ability to contact you about (and ONLY about) recalls and safety notices. Simply mail in the registration card that came with with your car seat. Or, for additional easy registration options, visit https://www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/car-seats-and-booster-seats -seat-registration

Too much bulk in a coat can create extra room in the harness. Thinner layers provide the same warmth, and the harness will still fit snugly

Trick-or-treating should be fun, not dangerous. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Halloween than on any other day of the year. The organization provides the following tips to stay safe on Halloween night:

1. Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.

2. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating.

3. Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street. Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.

4. Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.

5. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Choose face paint over masks when possible as masks can limit children’s vision.

Think your child is ready to ride in a booster seat? NHTSA recommends children should continue to travel in a car seat until they reach the maximum forward-facing height or weight, which might not be until age 8 or older.

When you and your child are ready to transition to a booster, choose one that properly positions both the lap and shoulder belts on your child. Learn more about booster seats: https://www.safekids.org/safetytips/field_risks/booster-seat
