From a 19-year career in TV news marketing at KTVU to advocating for long-term care residents in Alameda County—meet MSW Intern Mona Fox!

After navigating long-term care for her mother living with dementia, Mona felt called toward a more purpose-driven path. Now a Master of Social Work student at the University of the Pacific, she is using her broadcasting and communications background to advocate for resident rights, help families navigate complex care systems, and ensure vulnerable voices are heard.

"Before this internship, I had no idea a resource like this even existed," Mona shared. "Now that I've seen this work up close, I understand how much of a difference an Ombudsman can make for a resident and their family—because I needed that voice myself, and I didn't know where to find it."

Navigating support services for older adults in Solano County doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Did you know that our Solano County Ombudsman team is co-located right inside the Elder Justice Center in Fairfield alongside the Napa/Solano Area Agency on Aging?

What a day at the Oakland Zoo! 🦁🎶

We had the absolute best time tabling at the 23rd Annual Healthy Living Festival! The energy was unmatched—from live music setting the scene to an incredible gathering of community exhibitors sharing health and wellness resources tailored for older adults.

There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by a senior advocacy community that works tirelessly to support, empower, and celebrate our older neighbors. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Empowered Aging table to chat, grab resources, and dance along with us!

October marks Residents' Rights Month, an annual awareness initiative led by the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care (Consumer Voice)

This year’s national theme—"Join Us at the Table"—highlights the pivotal role that food, dining choices, culture, and shared mealtimes play in promoting dignity, community, and personal autonomy for long-term care residents.

At Empowered Aging, this observation reflects the core mission of our Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Long-Term Care Ombudsmen serve as independent, confidential advocates who ensure that resident choices—whether regarding care plans, medical treatment, or daily dining preferences—are fully honored.

How Ombudsmen align with this year's theme:
Advocating for Person-Centered Choice: Ensuring residents retain agency over their daily schedules, dietary options, and living environment.

Protecting Civil Rights & Autonomy: Safeguarding resident rights to voice grievances, request changes, and participate in resident councils.

Bridging Communication: Working collaboratively with providers, families, and facility staff to implement care models that respect culture, preference, and individuality.

Breast health doesn’t take a retirement.

Did you know that over 40% of breast cancer diagnoses occur in women aged 65 and older? As we age, prioritizing health screenings remains one of the most powerful acts of self-care and independence.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re reminding every woman that age is never a reason to stop paying attention to your body. Talk with your doctor about a personalized screening schedule, know what’s normal for you, and never hesitate to speak up if something feels off.
