CCCOE provides direct services to our county's most vulnerable students, including young people who are incarcerated, homeless, or in foster care. Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) is the 9th largest public school student population in California. CCCOE has a long history of providing direct services to some of our county’s most vulnerable students, including adults and young people

who are incarcerated, homeless, or in foster care, as well as students who have severe physical or emotional challenges. CCCOE serves 285 schools, 18 school districts, and over 176k students. CCCOE serves as an advocate for education and youth in our county, helps to increase public awareness of educational issues, and leads the way with bold countywide initiatives. CCCOE prepares Contra Costa County students to LEARN, LEAD, and ACHIEVE!

Description: This leadership series builds a county-wide network of Special Education leaders in mathematics. With a focus on learning acceleration strategies and building conceptual understanding of the math needed for success in Algebra 1, this community of practice focuses on necessary components to designing classes and district-wide systems which meet the needs of students with disabilities and unfinished learning from earlier grades.

“My greatest joy in teaching is being the modern ‘Ms. Pratt in my Room 1 Schoolhouse,’ blending the entire school community together at the chalkboard with a welcome sign to include everyone," said Melissa Johnston, Lafayette School District's Teacher of the Year.

Melissa is a Special Day Class Teacher at Springhill Elementary School, where she has dedicated the past decade to serving students with disabilities. A graduate of California State University, Hayward, she earned her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Saint Mary's College of California before later completing her Education Specialist Instruction Credential through Brandman University (now UMass Global).

Melissa's passion for inclusive education is reflected in her "Room 1 Family" philosophy, which brings students together through meaningful classroom experiences, peer partnerships, and opportunities that help every child feel valued, connected, and supported. Through programs like Buddy Readers and inclusive learning activities, she works to ensure all students are recognized for their strengths and contributions.

Meet the next generation of journalists.

Sixteen students from 12 high schools across Contra Costa County have been selected for the 2026-27 Contra Costa Youth Journalism (CCYJ) program. Following a summer journalism training camp, these students will report on issues impacting their schools and communities, with stories published throughout the school year on CCSpin and Local News Matters.

Now entering its fourth cohort, the award-winning CCYJ program helps students develop reporting, critical thinking, and communication skills while amplifying youth voices in local journalism.

"My love for children is at the heart of why I chose elementary education. Young learners are discovering who they are as students and as people, and I feel honored to play a role in that journey," said Kimberly Berry, first-grade teacher at Timber Point Elementary School.

Kudos to Kimberly Berry, Byron Union School District's 2026-27 Teacher of the Year!

With 15 years in education, Kimberly is dedicated to helping young learners build confidence, develop foundational academic skills, and cultivate a love of learning. She earned a bachelor's degree in Child Development from California State University, Sacramento, and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Chapman University.

Throughout her career, Kimberly has taught kindergarten, transitional kindergarten, and first grade, creating supportive learning environments where students can grow academically, develop confidence, and build a positive relationship with school. She is also an active contributor to her school community, collaborating with colleagues through Professional Learning Communities and serving as Timber Point Elementary's yearbook creator and editor.
