With tomorrow being National Donut Day, today's features three PHPD officers in 2016 picking up a few raised glazed and maple bars from Donut King.

National Donut Day was created 1938 and honors the "Donut Lassies," the courageous Salvation Army volunteers who served the fried treats to American soldiers on the front lines during World War I. In 1917, these Salvation Army volunteers set up makeshift huts near the front lines in France. Lacking baking equipment, they fried donuts in soldiers' metal helmets.

Today is WORLD BICYCLE DAY and we'd like to use this as an opportunity to remind everyone about the use of e-bikes.

As a police department, we continue to receive calls for service from citizens reporting hazardous and illegal activity involving young e-bike riders. Many other cities in Northern California have experienced tragic accidents (including fatal accidents) involving e-bikes, and we seek to educate and inform as a way to help prevent these types of events from occurring in our city - BUT we need YOUR help to keep our community (and our kids) safe when using these devices.

Safe e-bike riding includes:

- Obeying the speed limit
- Going with the flow of traffic (not against)
- Yielding to pedestrians
- Adhering to all street signage and traffic signals

And to everyone who has purchased or is thinking about purchasing an electronic ride-on device for their child, please be aware: E-MOTORCYCLES AND E-BICYCLES ARE NOT THE SAME. E-motorcycles are governed by the same laws that govern standard motorcycles, which include licensing and insurance requirements. Some e-motorcycles are designed to look VERY similar to e-bicycles, so doing thorough research is imperative for the safety of your child.

Yesterday evening our Officers worked another successful Theft Supersession detail in the Crossroads Shopping center. While working directly with Loss Prevention for the major retailers throughout the shopping center, a number of individuals were arrested, and several other thefts were thwarted. As a result of their proactive work, the following people were arrested for numerous theft and narcotics related charges:

- Llyod Canamore (18), Oakland
-17 year old juvenile, Oakland
-Annemarie Melena (30), Concord
-Joshua Almond (43), Concord

As the summer begins to kick into high gear, plan to see our Officers working a few more of these details in the coming weeks!

Shout-out to all of this morning's participants at Walnut Creek PD, Martinez PD and especially our OWN Pleasant Hill PD folks (and City Manager Ethan Bindernagel, who joined with our PHPD runners this morning) for helping carry the flame of hope along its route in support of the Special Olympics of Northern California! It was a great day to pound that pavement for a great cause and we appreciate the support of our communities, partners in law enforcement and the organizers at the Special Olympics.

The Special Olympics Northern California is dedicated to promoting unity and empowering children and adults with intellectual disabilities, and the mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run is to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics.
