Access to 55 miles of meandering trails with streams, pastures, ridges, a 22-acre lake and the Hudson River. • 13 Bridges Loop Trail - 1.9 miles of even to moderate grade, leading to 13 bridges on the wandering Gory Brook
• Bird Feeder Area - located next to the art gallery, many birds frequent the feeders in all seasons
• Fern Garden - located at the entrance, this garden is volunteer maintained

• Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park - 0.9 miles of the Old Croton Aqueduct travel through the preserve.
• Peony Monument - located next to the art gallery, these beautiful flowers were donated by a town in Southern Japan (the town of Yatsuka in the Shimane Prefecture). The peonies bloom every spring in late April through early May.
• Rockwood Hall - it was once the county estate of the late William M. Rockefeller
• Swan Lake - located a short walk from the art gallery, a 22-acre lake

Cedar Waxwings

There are many migratory birds who visit Westchester County each spring. What is significant about the Cedar Waxwings is the regularity with which they come each June to feast on the Serviceberry Trees in the courtyard of the Visitors Center at Rockefeller State Park Preserve.

The Cedar Waxwings have a short little feeding frenzy here in our park. Each year flocks of them show up for the serviceberries approximately the second week of June. They pick the trees clean in several days. They still are around the park throughout spring and summer. They migrate south of us in the winter.

Their diet consists of fruit and insects. So, your best chance to see them is when they come to feast on a tree with berries.

I will be doing bird photography workshops on June 13th 20T6. This is approximately the week the Cedar Waxwings visit the courtyard where they feast on the serviceberry trees. The workshop will consist of a class on the basics of bird photography followed by a field trip in the park.

Enjoy a Hike with Mike through the preserve!

A 3-hour circumnavigation of Eagle Hill that will include our triple-arch bridge and the Pocantico River as it meanders along fields and forested trails.

The hike will leave promptly at 9:00 from the Visitor Center courtyard.

Make sure you have water with you.

Max: 20 people.

Cost: FREE. Registration required.

Floral Whispers Gallery Reception and Coloring Book Fundraiser ♿
Join us for our latest gallery reception!

The Floral Whispers art exhibit offers a quiet yet powerful reflection on how artists reinterpret the evolving beauty of nature. On view from May 2 through June 27, the exhibition is inspired by the stunning tree peony garden at Rockefeller State Park Preserve and invites visitors to experience a striking collection of works rooted in one of nature’s most celebrated blooms.

Bringing together a diverse group of contemporary artists, the exhibit reimagines floral forms through painting, photography, and mixed media. This special event is also the Coloring Book Fundraiser, where you can purchase a one-of-a-kind coloring book that showcases photography from over 30 local artists.

Our Gallery Reception will provide refreshments and light food as you meet the artists and take in the new exhibit.

Exhibit will run May 2 – June 27.

Join us for a fun afternoon of storytelling and creativity with award-winning children's author Betsy Franco Feeney!
Children will enjoy an interactive storytime experience, along with face painting, refreshments, and a complimentary copy of the park’s newly released coloring book to take home and enjoy. The Leucistic Hawk (as seen in RSPP!)

Even though this leucitic hawk is all white, it shows the classic, textbook features of the species:

1. The Tail: A rich, solid, rufous-red upper tail surface that gives the species its name. 2. The Underwings: Classic dark patagial marks (the leading edge of the inner wing near the "shoulder") and dark wrist patches, contrasted against lighter underwing coverts.
3. The Body: A dark head and mantle with a distinct belly band across the whitish chest.

Seeing two adults interacting like this in early June often indicates a mated pair defending a territory, hunting together, or tending to a nearby nest. Red-tailed Hawks frequently pair for life, meaning this unique, pale individual likely has a very loyal partner tracking right alongside it.

Data from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeederWatch estimates that roughly 1 in 30,000 birds expresses a plumage abnormality like leucism or albinism. Out of millions of bird sightings reported by citizens and scientists annually, only a tiny fraction of a percent display these ghostly traits.

Join us for a fun and interactive program centered around New York State Parks’ Explorer Club Activity Book! Designed for young explorers and their families, this program invites participants to unplug and dive into nature through hands-on activities, games, and discovery. While out on the trials, we’ll explore topics like wildlife, outdoor safety, and sustainability while completing sections of the booklet together. By the end, you will earn an official Explorer Club patch!

Recommended age: 5+
