🚒🔥 Heat, Smoke, and Reps: Live Fire Training Complete

Members of the Pleasantville Fire Department recently wrapped up the second half of our annual live fire training at the Atlantic County Fire Academy. We spread the training over multiple days so every shift could get an opportunity.

Inside the burn building, crews trained under real heat and smoke with limited visibility. Instructors and safety officers oversaw every evolution. Training covered:

🔥 Interior fire attack
🔥 Search
🔥 Ventilation
🔥 Ground Ladders
🔥 Pump operations
🔥 Officer development and fireground command

The officer development piece matters. Our company officers ran their crews through each scenario, making decisions under realistic conditions. After every evolution, everyone gathered on the pad to talk through what worked and what needs tightening.

Thank you to our members for putting in the work, to the PFD instructors who led this training, and to the Atlantic County Fire Academy for the use of its facility.

From South Main Street to Leeds Avenue, our members put in another stop on today’s school visits! 🚒

At Leeds Avenue School, Pleasantville Fire Department members taught students what to do the moment the smoke alarm sounds. Our firefighters showed them how to stay low and go, crawling beneath the smoke where the air is cleaner and safer to breathe, and then the students practiced it themselves. We also stressed knowing two ways out of every room and practicing that plan at home before an emergency, not during one.

Students also watched a firefighter go from regular uniform to full turnout gear and SCBA. It’s one of the most important parts of the visit. Kids who know what we look like in gear are far less likely to hide from the people trying to reach them.

And of course, Sparky the Fire Dog joined us. He handed out plenty of high-fives, and the students made sure he felt welcome. 🐾

A sincere thank you to the Leeds Avenue School teachers, staff, and students for having us. Families, here’s tonight’s homework: have your kids show you the two ways out of their bedroom, then pick your family’s outside meeting spot together.

Fire Prevention Month is in full swing, and today the Pleasantville Fire Department spent the morning with the students at South Main Street School! 🚒

Our firefighters started with the lessons that save lives: every home needs working smoke alarms, every room needs two ways out, and every family needs a meeting spot outside where everyone gathers once they’re out. The students listened closely and had plenty of good questions.

We also showed students how to “stay low and go.” Smoke and heat rise, so the cleanest air is near the floor. Our firefighters demonstrated how to drop down and crawl to the nearest exit, and the students got to practice it themselves.

Next, one of our firefighters suited up in full turnout gear and SCBA. With the mask on and the air pack breathing, a firefighter can look and sound pretty scary to a child. We show students this ahead of time so that in a real emergency they know the person coming through the smoke is there to help, and they should never hide.

Then Sparky the Fire Dog showed up, and that got the biggest reaction of the day. 🐾

Thank you to the South Main Street School administration, teachers, and staff for welcoming us, and to the students for being such a great audience. Parents and guardians, ask your kids what they learned today. Then take five minutes tonight to test your smoke alarms and walk through your escape plan together. Those few minutes matter.

**Thank you, Pleasantville! 🚒❤️**

Roughly 100 attendees came through Fire Headquarters today for our Fire Prevention Month Open House, and our members couldn't have asked for a better turnout.

Families watched our crews demonstrate the Jaws of Life on a vehicle, then looked up as one of our members rappelled from the bucket of Tower 7. Kids climbed through our apparatus, made their way through the firefighter course, and took a turn on a real hoseline. Plenty of future firefighters were spotted today. 💪

We also had a surprise for the crowd: a simulated room fire. Our members walked everyone through what happens when a fire starts and why every second counts. They covered why working smoke alarms matter, why you should stay low under the smoke, and why you need to get out and stay out.

If your family hasn't tested its smoke alarms or practiced a home escape plan lately, tonight is a good night to do both.

Thank you to every member who gave their time to make today happen, and to everyone who stopped by. Our doors are always open.

**¡Gracias, Pleasantville! 🚒❤️**
