Atlantic County Sheriff Joseph 'Tokyo' O'Donoghue alerts residents to a complex and sophisticated scam targeting the community. Please be aware: In the last 48 hours, the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office has received several complaints regarding unsolicited calls where the callers claim to be representatives of our office and the Atlantic County Court system. Utilizing artificial intelligence, these scammers create audio files from social media content that mimic the voice of a family member, claiming they are in trouble due to an accident or warrant with a $150,000 bond, and demand a payment of $15,000, or 10% of the bond. These calls are designed to sound legitimate, including the use of real names and fake case numbers, such as calls from someone claiming to be Tyler Scottsdale with the phone number 686-208-7493. The numbers used are often registered in states like Virginia or Mississippi. We want to emphasize that the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office and the Court system do not solicit money over the phone for bail or fines, and we do not send agents to collect money.

If you receive such a call, please document the details without proceeding with any payment, and reach out to Officer TJ Snyder at 609-909-7200 or via email at [email protected]. Your vigilance and willingness to share this warning with friends and family are greatly appreciated.

The NJCCIC is receiving incident reports from NJ residents regarding another SMS text phishing (SMiShing) scam campaign impersonating the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). These messages claim that the user has an unpaid traffic violation with a payment deadline of March 18th. The text states administrative action is March 19th and failure to pay will result in recorded violation, driver's license suspension for up to 4 business days, and suspension of your vehicle registration. The links included in these campaigns often lead to fraudulent websites that attempt to extract personally identifiable information, financial details, or account credentials. The NJCCIC advises refraining from clicking included links or responding to these messages and instead reporting and deleting them.

The NJ MVC only sends text messages to remind residents about scheduled MVC appointments. It does not send text messages regarding driver’s licenses or vehicle registration status.

Report SMiShing messages to the NJCCIC at cyber.nj.gov/report.

Hello,

We hope that everyone is having a wonderful and safe start to their summer.

We wanted to make everyone aware of a current text message scam, which alleges that the Motor Vehicle Commission shows an outstanding traffic ticket and links you to a website for payment. If you receive a message similar to the one below, do not click on the link or provide any information. Remember, the Motor Vehicle Commission will never call you, text you, or e-mail you unsolicited. Everything they do is by letter, unless they are responding to your e-mail inquiry.

As you know, if you are ever in need of assistance with any traffic tickets or Municipal Court offenses, we are here to help.

On August 5, 2021, Gov. Murphy signed into law legislation that requires drivers to safely pass pedestrians, as well as people on bikes, scooters, or other means of conveyance.
It requires drivers to move over one lane when passing, if it is safe to do so, or allow four feet of space between the car and the person being passed. If that is not safe to do, it would require a driver to slow to 25 mph.
- If at all possible, the driver should change into a non-adjacent lane before getting closer than four feet.
- The driver should leave a reasonable, safe distance of at least four feet when approaching the protected users until they can pass safely.
- If those options are not possible, the driver must reduce their speed to 25 miles per hour and be prepared to stop
