🔥 Fire Prevention Week 2025 🔥

This week, members and officers of Unity Volunteer Fire Department visited 10 different groups of kids throughout our community to talk about fire safety! 🚒👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

The kids had a blast exploring the fire trucks, trying on gear, and learning how to stay safe in case of a fire. It’s always one of our favorite weeks of the year — especially since several of our own members have children in these schools, making the visits even more special ❤️

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers who made this possible — many of whom used vacation days from their full-time jobs to spend time teaching fire safety and connecting with the next generation. Your commitment to our community never goes unnoticed.

‼️Don’t forget to stop by our station this Sunday, October 12th between 11-3 for more fire safety information and a chance to check out the trucks and station!

💡 Day 6 – What To Do If a Battery Catches Fire

Even with proper use, lithium-ion batteries can fail. Be ready:

🔥 If a device starts smoking, popping, or sparking:

Unplug it immediately (if safe to do so).

Do NOT try to move or handle the device.

Call 911 right away — and alert others nearby.

If it’s safe, use a Class ABC or lithium-ion–rated fire extinguisher.

⚠️ Never use water on a lithium-ion battery fire — it can make the reaction worse.

Being prepared and acting fast can prevent injuries and keep small incidents from becoming large fires.

❗ Myth vs Fact: Battery Safety

Myth: “All batteries are safe once they’re in a device.”

Fact: Even batteries inside devices can be damaged by drops, heat, or improper charging. A damaged battery can erupt unexpectedly.

Other tips:

▪️Don’t block ventilation while charging

▪️Avoid exposing batteries to extreme heat (e.g. inside a hot car)

▪️Don’t force incompatible batteries into a device

♻️ Tip #3: Recycle responsibly

🚯Never put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or standard recycling bins — they can cause fires in waste systems.

📍Find a local battery- or electronics-recycling drop-off site (search via Call2Recycle or local waste management).

📱We’re happy to help you identify a safe drop-off location in our area — message us or check our website for more contact information www.unityvfd233.org

To learn more about lithium ion battery safety, Plum Borough is hosting a FREE class in conjunction with Allegheny County Emergency Services Fire Marshal's Office tomorrow, Thursday October 9th at 6pm at the Municipal Complex at 2000 Mike Thomas Way.

🔌 Tip #2: Charge safely

Here’s how to reduce risk while charging:

📱Use the charger that came with the device (or one approved by the manufacturer).

⚡Always charge on a hard, non-flammable surface (no beds, couches, or flammable materials).

🔋Never leave batteries charging unattended for long periods.

📵Don’t overcharge — unplug once fully charged.

🔥If a battery gets hot, deformed, or begins to swell — stop using it immediately.
