This Mid-Century Modern home located in Midland, Michigan. It was designed in 1955 by architect Glenn Beach, and built in 1956 for the Forsythe Family.

The home is listed in the Mid-Century Midland Architecture Registry.

Docomomo US is excited to have you join us next June in Dallas and Fort Worth for the 2027 National Symposium!

Next year’s theme, Lonestar Modernism: From Wide Open Spaces to Urban Places will explore the remarkable architecture, landscapes, and urbanism that define one of America’s most dynamic modern regions.

From internationally celebrated masterpieces to hidden gems, we’ll discover the people, places, and stories that made Texas modern.

The Call for Abstracts is now open to anyone involved in the preservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement.

We encourage architects, landscape architects, planners, preservation professionals, architectural historians, scholars, students, advocates, modern homeowners, enthusiasts, and beyond to submit an abstract proposal based on the theme relating to projects in North Texas and across the country.

We welcome submissions that take a holistic approach to modern resources (not just buildings) and consider the social context, technical merits, aesthetics, and settings when evaluating them.

Abstracts should include how the subject contributes to the broader discussion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, either generally or in relation to a specific field of study.

Statement on Proposed Changes to Washington  Dulles  International Airport: Over the past week, many of you have seen news stories and dramatic AI renderings depicting a proposed $22 billion transformation of Washington Dulles International Airport.

These images have understandably generated significant concern within the preservation community and among those who value Eero Saarinen’s internationally significant terminal.

Recently, Docomomo US met with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to discuss the status of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Federal Aviation Administration redevelopment proposal and the recently executed Programmatic Agreement governing the Section 106 review process.

Based on that discussion, we understand that the renderings and concepts recently released to the public do not appear to correspond to the project that has undergone environmental review and Section 106 consultation to date.

At present, neither the Virginia SHPO nor Docomomo US has been provided information explaining how the newly released concepts relate to the approved project or the existing Programmatic Agreement.

Docomomo US wants our members to know that protecting the architectural integrity of Dulles International Airport is one of our highest advocacy priorities and we are actively monitoring this situation.

We are in communication with the Virginia SHPO and other consulting parties and will continue to evaluate any new information as it becomes available. Should the scope of the project change or additional review become necessary, Docomomo US will advocate for a transparent process that fully considers the potential effects on this extraordinary landmark.

We will continue to keep our members informed and will respond forcefully to any proposal that threatens the character-defining features or historic significance of Eero Saarinen’s masterpiece.

We’re excited to share that our friends at A2Modern have announced an upcoming lecture, “Hidden History: Midcentury Modern Architecture in Grosse Pointe” featuring Deborah Lubera Kawsky, President of DocoMomoMI

Grosse Pointe, Michigan is home to numerous MidCentury Modern masterpieces by Marcel Breuer, Alexander Girard, William Kessler, Paul Rudolph, Minoru Yamasaki and others.

This phenomenon reflects the prosperity of Metro Detroit at midcentury, Michigan’s primacy in modern design, and the existence of aesthetically adventurous Grosse Pointe patrons.

Join art historian Dr. Deborah Lubera Kawsky to explore the backstories behind iconic MidCentury structures such as Breuer’s Grosse Pointe Central Library, Girard’s McLucas House, Kessler’s W. Hawkins Ferry House and Rudolph’s Frank and Anne Parcells House.

Our friends at A2Modern are hosting an event with guest speaker Dale Gyure!

Gyure is an author of the book Minoru Yamasaki, and is currently a professor in the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University. He is also on the board of Docomomo Michigan.

This lecture is part of their a2modern Midcentury Modern Lecture Series.

Minoru Yamasaki is best known as the architect behind large public projects such as the original World Trade Center, the McGregor Memorial Conference Center at Wayne State University, the US Science Pavilion at the Seattle World’s Fair, and the Lambert-St. Louis Airport.

Few people realize that Yamasaki lived in Michigan for forty years and most of his built work is located here.

This presentation will focus on Yamasaki’s architecture in Michigan, particularly his lesser-known buildings, in recognition of the fact that he spent most of his professional life creating architecture that contributed to the fabric of Michigan’s everyday built environment

We are so excited to share that Katherine White, Docomomo Michigan vice-president, and Curator of Design at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation co-curated this amazing exhibition, “Fabric of America: Our Fashions, Textiles, and Technologies.”

The exhibit is currently on display at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation!

It invites attendees to explore the deep connections between textiles and our shared history.

The limited-time exhibition features more than 500 artifacts from The Henry Ford’s own textile collections— many of which have never been publicly displayed before!

Through five enduring American values — liberty, practicality, inventiveness, abundance and individualism — this exhibition reveals how fabric shapes who we are as a people and a nation.

The stories presented in this exhibition are a retrospective of the ways clothing and textiles have conveyed identity, ambition and possibility across American history.

“Fabric of America” shows how these artifacts capture the country’s history and the diverse experiences of its people, offering a compelling look at how fabric continues to reflect and define us.

This building was designed by architect Mies van der Rohe. It’s located in the Lafayette Park neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan.

It’s a great example of mid-century modernist architecture by van der Rohe, and features contemporary updates alongside original preserved details.

The co-op is located within the park-like enclave of Lafayette Park. Highlights include expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light and offer views of the mature surrounding landscaping and park.

The Koenig House is located in Ishpeming, Michigan.

It was designed by Winston Elting Architects, Chicago in 1963, and constructed in 1964. It was designed for Dr. Harry and Debbie Koenig.

The home was designed to embrace its natural surroundings. The Koenig House showcases the clean lines, warm materials, and seamless indoor/outdoor connection that define classic Mid-Century Modern architecture.

Soaring vaulted ceilings, a dramatic floor-to-ceiling brick gas fireplace, an open catwalk, and a spacious loft create bright, inviting living spaces.

Extensive built-in cabinetry and custom closets reflect the thoughtful craftsmanship and functional design of the era. A detached two-story, two-car garage includes a heated upper-level workshop and traditional sauna.

The current owners preserved the home’s architectural integrity while improving long-term performance.

The Koenig House is an important piece of Upper Peninsula architectural history—a meticulously maintained Mid-Century Modern residence where timeless design, exceptional craftsmanship, and a natural setting come together.

This mid-century modern home was built in 1960, and is located in Detroit, Michigan. It was designed by Detroit architect Louis G. Redstone.

The mid-century modern house at 2771 W. Seven Mile Road associated with the Faygo family. It was built for Philip Feigenson (son of Faygo founder and former company CEO) and his wife, Evelyne.

The home has the features of the mid-century movement, including an open floor plan, expansive ceilings with exposed wood beams, walnut paneling, a dramatic wall of glass overlooking nature, original ceramic tile, and a courtyard patio.
