💜 August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day 💜

Today, we remember the lives lost to overdose, recognize the grief of families and loved ones, and work to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use and overdose.
Overdose can happen to anyone, and knowing how to respond can save a life.
Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose when given in time. Learning the signs of an overdose, having naloxone available and calling 911 can make a difference.
The Marshall County Health Department has FREE Naloxone available during regular business hours.

🦟 According to the IDOH, West Nile virus is the most commonly reported mosquito-borne disease in Indiana. Most people who become infected do not develop symptoms, but some may develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. In rare cases, West Nile virus can cause serious illness affecting the nervous system.

🚨 Measles cases have been reported in Indiana. 🚨

The good news is that there are currently no known measles cases in Marshall County. However, measles is extremely contagious and can spread quickly when people are not protected.

Now is a great time to check and make sure your child is up to date on their MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine.

💛 Breastfeeding support can make a measurable difference.

A study highlighted in the CDC’s Guide to Strategies to Support Breastfeeding Mothers and Babies found that women who received requested peer support:

🤱 Breastfed an average of 2 weeks longer
🤱 Were 22% more likely to initiate breastfeeding

Research has also found that peer support programs can help increase breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusivity.
Support can include encouragement, breastfeeding education, help solving problems and referrals when additional care is needed.

Hot August temperatures can become dangerous quickly. 🥵

Heat exhaustion may cause heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness or cool, clammy skin.

🚨 Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Warning signs can include confusion, loss of consciousness and very high body temperature.
Stay hydrated, take breaks from the heat and check on those who may be more vulnerable during hot weather.

When in doubt, get out of the heat and seek medical attention.
