Art and animals are now on display at the Pocatello Animal Shelter.

Recently, local artist Josh Pohlman with Sixes Art Initiative completed a 7 foot 7 inch tall by 47 foot long mural on the west side of the dog runs at the shelter. Painted in graffiti motif, the mural features over a dozen cat and dog silhouettes, a stylized “Pocatello Animal Shelter,” and the shelter’s logo.

“When we saw the call for artists that Pocatello Animal Services put out, we jumped on the opportunity to work with such a great organization,” said Josh Pohlman. “Our goal was to cover the outward-facing wall of the exterior dog run to make a colorful, fun, and inviting first impression.”

“As you come up to the shelter, it’s the first thing you see,” Josh Heinz, Animal Services Director, said. “The mural provides a fresh look to the building and it certainly makes the shelter stand out. Hopefully, it leads to more adoptions.”

The project was funded by The Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter. Previously, the group has purchased awnings for the shelter’s dog runs, bought kennel covers, and provided ongoing support for shelter adoption programs. The Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) organization and for more information on the group, visit pocatelloshelterfriends.org.

“The mural brings some attention to the shelter and makes it more inviting,” said Barbara Stone, Chair of The Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter. “We hope that people will come up to the shelter to take a look at the mural, come inside, meet one of the pets, and take them to their forever home.”

“On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to thank The Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter for providing the funds for the mural, and having a local artist like Josh was great. He was professional and easy to work with,” Heinz said.

We love getting wonderful updates of our babies who found their forever home! Thank you!

"Maverick is doing great
He's very smart as we expected as his breed is very intelligent.
He has good house habits
He'd love to get my old girl Sis to play with him but it will take time for her to get used to him.
Here's a photo of Maverick thinking he's a lap puppy
Thanks for everything"

Such an amazing life changing story that was shared to us from a previous adopter. We love hearing such happy success stories!

"First I want to say, Josie is fine, she is doing awesomely."
"Friday, My 16 year old daughter was coming back from Idaho Falls and was in a major car accident. She was about 60 miles away from me. She was in a little Jetta, and the accident involved her, a semi truck and a big f150 with a trailer. She is okay. She basically walked away (though everyone is shocked) with just scratches and a few bruises. Josie Girl was in the car with her. Josie is perfectly fine, not even a scratch, or bruise or soreness. We had her checked out and she had no injuries and so far has no PTSD. She is more than willing to get into a car again as long as myself or my daughter are in the car. My car was completely totaled and not a window was left unshattered and not a panel left undented.
Now for the good news, my daughters first thought was to make sure Josie was okay, then to call me. Josie was not tethered to the seat (which is good she probably would have been choked). Josie did not try to get out of the car until my daughter opened the door and called her. From that second on, even with all the Chaos and people and noise, she never left my daughters side. They even had to allow her in the ambulance with my daughter because she was basically glued to her hip. She was a calming factor for my daughter and gave my daughter something to focus on to keep her calm in a very scary situation. When people make a comment about my daughter having an Angel or Guardian looking over her, she tells them Josie is her Guardian Angel. She tells them that Josie is what kept her calm and focused. Josie has been such a blessing to us and we are so grateful that we get to be her forever home. I can’t imagine how much more scared and alone my daughter would have felt if she had not had Josie to comfort her after the accident before I got to the scene. "
"Thank you For picking us and allowing us to give her the best life we can!"

UPDATE- RITO WAS ADOPTED AFTER HIS VISIT WITH BLAKE! Thank you so much Blake and Brooke for spending time with our sweet boy and bringing such amazing new toys for all our dogs! ♥

Pocatello Animal Services has just ONE adoptable dog. This guy, Rito. He is only 8 months old, and looks like he wants to learn how to play.

While we were there, we noticed that the squeaky toys were dead, so Blake and I went to Ross and got them a whole bag full. And Blake donated her tooth fairy money.

It was a busy afternoon.

You can license your dog with Pocatello Animal Services for half-price through May 31.

Until the end of May, the department is offering $5 dog licenses for dogs that are spayed or neutered and $10 licenses for dogs that are not spayed or neutered.

“Dogs that get picked up by an Animal Control Officer are more likely to be returned to their owner rather than taken to the Shelter if they have a license on them and they are microchipped,” said Josh Heinz, Animal Services Director. “If an owner has kept their information up to date with the license and microchip company, we can get pets home quicker.”

Pet parents can pick up their half-price license at the Pocatello Animal Shelter, City of Pocatello Mayor’s Office, and local veterinary offices. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents who are getting a license from the Pocatello Animal Shelter are asked to call 208-234-6156 and make an appointment. Residents who come to City Hall for their dog license are asked to call the Mayor’s Office from the phone provided in the lobby or from their personal phone. A staff member will meet them at the interior doors to complete the transaction. Lastly, residents who are getting a license through a local veterinary office should contact the vet’s office for further instructions.

04/07/2020

Starting Tuesday, April 7, Pocatello Animal Services will begin facilitating adoptions of animals by appointment only Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

No more than two potential pet parents at a time will be permitted into the shelter to meet an animal and appropriate social distancing will be followed. To schedule an appointment, call 208-234-6156.

“Since closing, we’ve cleaned and disinfected the shelter as well as taken the time to develop a process that will keep the public as safe as possible,” said Josh Heinz, Pocatello Animal Services Director. “We’re looking forward to these animals finding their forever homes.”

The decision to offer appointment-only adoptions was made in consultation with Southeastern Idaho Public Health. During the adoption process, employees will be wearing masks and gloves.

“Thank you to the public for their continued support and willingness to provide homes for our shelter animals,” Heinz said.

At this time, the Pocatello Animal Shelter is not accepting stray animals or owner-surrendered animals.

We know many of you are at home right now but still going outside for fresh air and exercise. If you take your dogs out for a walk with you, please remember, they need to be on a leash.

If you want to take them somewhere off-leash, Bartz Field (on the campus of Idaho State University), Katie’s Dog Park (near the Pocatello Animal Shelter), and Bannock Bark Park (in Old Town Pocatello) are available. Just make sure you’re practicing appropriate social distancing of 6-feet or more between you and other people.

If you have any questions on the leash law, give us a call at 208-234-6156.

"Urinary Incontinence One problem that may be associated with spaying is urinary incontinence, or the unintentional leaking of urine. Veterinarians recommend that pets with urinary incontinence be evaluated by a professional, as urinary incontinence has a number of potential causes. One common cause is hormone imbalance following spay surgery. Proper function of urinary tract tissue is dependent upon adequate exposure to estrogen and after a pet’s ovaries are removed, her estrogen levels are low. Lack of estrogen may cause the urethral sphincter (a muscle used to control the exit of urine) to relax and release urine involuntarily. Incontinence is most common during rest as muscles are relaxed and urine tends seep out."

Please watch for her. Adopted through the shelter.
The FREE adoption for the cats sounds like it was a great success...but there have been reports that people are jumping on free adoptions for cats just to feed them to their snakes...how do we know that that is not the case.....were all the people vetted to know that they are caring people or just taking advantage of it.....almost makes me sick to think about this...
Can you tell us why you do not do more posting of the animals you have for adoption? Seams like that would be a great way to get adoption up?
Please do more posting of the animals you have for adoption.

Good people doing good for our community and animals
8 years ago today I went to the Pocatello Animal Shelter to just “look” at the dogs and ended up crossing paths with this handsome, curly tailed, goofball. We have had many adventures over the years, and while he’s starting to grey a little, Kyran hasn’t slowed down a bit. We still go for, hikes, swims, walks, and he’s the best running bud I could ever ask for! I love this handsome guy so much and I’m eternally grateful we found one another that day at the pound. Happy 8th gotcha day, Kyran, and here’s to many more! Of course l, we would like to give a special thank you to the folks at the Pocatello Animal Shelter for all they do on a daily basis. All the memories, all the adventures, and all the love Kyran and I get to share is because they make it possible for us and so many other families. We are forever in their debt! #gotchaday #bordercolliemix #muttsofinstagram #shelterdog #shelterdogsofinstagram #derpydog #adopteddog #thankyouPocatelloAnimalServices
Looking for this baby boy, extra toes. Long haired very friendly. Lives on connor street in old town, got out on the 13th, hasn't been home since. Help my friend find her baby. Her little girl is so sad without her kitty. Any info plz contact me 2087053829
Anybody know who this momma kitty belongs to? On Harrison in old town. I live right behind main street and would hate to see her hit. Help please!
Our Jack Russell got out of the yard yesterday, 8/3, and we've been unable to locate him. I will be in touch with the shelter first thing in the morning but am also hoping that if someone has found him they can reach out to me as soon as possible so I can pick him up. He has his tags on which include both mine and my husband's phone numbers. He's terribly missed and worried about. In the Canyon/Fremont area.
