CASA Idaho 6th Judicial District

CASA Idaho 6th Judicial District CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for the child's best interest of abused , abandoned and abused children.
Every day in this country, 1,900 children become victims of abuse or neglect, and four of them will die. Every day. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children is a network of 933 community-based programs that recruit, train and support citizen-volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities. Volunteer advocates—empowered directly by the courts—offer judges the critical information they need to ensure that each child’s rights and needs are being attended to while in foster care. Volunteers stay with children until they are placed in loving permanent homes. For many abused children, a CASA volunteer is the only constant adult presence in their lives.

Nobody longs for a safe and loving family more than a child in foster care. As a CASA volunteer, you are empowered by the courts to help make this dream a reality. You will not only bring positive change to the lives of these vulnerable children, but also their children and generations to come. And in doing so, you will enrich your life as well. You do not have to be a lawyer or social worker to be a volunteer. We welcome people from all walks of life. We are simply looking for people who care about children and have common sense. As a volunteer, you will be thoroughly trained and well supported by professional staff to help you through each case.

Mission: "Our mission is to support effective volunteer advocacy for the best interest of abused abandoned and neglected children in the 6th Judicial District and ensure every child a safe, permanent and nurturing home"

We are proud to honor our Volunteer and Volunteer Attorney of the year, Susan Longley and Joseph Preston!

Susan has been a CASA volunteer for almost 3 years. She and her husband love to spend time outdoors running and hiking along Pocatello's many mountain trails, and enjoy spending time with their children and their dog. Susan has worked tirelessly on each of her cases investigating, preparing reports, and searching out appropriate services for children. She regularly goes above and beyond, sometimes taking up to 5 cases at a time. We are so excited to recognize her this year, and we appreciate her hard work and dedication!

Pocatello Attorney Joe Preston has served as a CASA volunteer attorney for three years and has donated numerous hours to advising and representing CASA Guardians ad Litem. Joe lives in Bannock County with his wife Sarah and their three young children. Joe is currently a partner at Echo Hawk & Olsen. His understanding of Idaho laws and regulations and willingness to research case law related to challenging child protection cases shows his dedication to the children of Idaho's 6th Judicial District. His efforts will have a lasting impact on the families in our community.

We sincerely thank Joe, Susan, and all our amazing volunteers and volunteer attorneys for the work they do for children every day! To find out more about the CASA program, visit our website at www.casa6id.org.

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho

Prevent Child Abuse Idaho

Idaho Governor Little signed the proclamation for 2020 Child Abuse Prevention Month this week.

Whereas, every child has a right to a safe, secure and supportive childhood, free from abuse and neglect; and

Whereas, in this time of crisis, it is the love and support we find in our families, communities and cultures that provide the strength we need to keep moving forward; and

Whereas, we recognize that school closures, unemployment, physical distancing and social isolation necessitated by the outbreak of Covid-19 are extremely stressful for many families in Idaho and stress is a known trigger for child maltreatment; and

Whereas, child abuse and neglect continue to be serious threats to public health as documented in scientific studies on adverse childhood experiences (ACE) shown to impact a wide range of medical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral disorders; and

Whereas, parents and caregivers who have a support system of family and friends, know where to find resources and understand how to remain resilient in challenging times like these, are best equipped to provide safe, stable and nurturing environments for their children; and

Whereas, during Child Abuse Prevention Month, Idahoans are called upon to renew their commitment to strengthening families and support statewide and community-based child abuse prevention programs; and

Whereas, statewide and community-based prevention programs, staffed by knowledgeable and dedicated providers, serve as proven and effective ways to reduce child abuse and neglect in every corner of Idaho; and

Whereas, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships between families, social service agencies, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community;

Now, therefore, I, Brad Little, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby recognize April 2020 as CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH in the State of Idaho, and I call on all Idahoans to strengthen their resolve to prevent child abuse and neglect in all of our homes and communities, and to strive each day to build a brighter future for the children of our great state.

One important role of the CASA/GAL volunteer is partnering with others in a child’s case to identify and advocate for the best supports for that child. Children who have experienced abuse or neglect need quality, therapeutic care and support to move beyond those experiences and thrive.
This #ChildAbusePreventionMonth, help a child thrive by becoming a volunteer or by donating so we can train and support other volunteers. https://nationalcasagal.org/ #EyesOnKids
