It's no secret that young kids love to sing and do chants. We do an alphabet chant that goes like this--

A, Ally Alligator. a, a, a (a sound 3 times while patting head)
B, Benny Beaver. b, b, b (b sound 3 times while patting head)

And so on.

Saying, seeing, and adding movement helps solidify concepts in little minds. Plus, it's fun and they love it! πŸ™‚

It's no secret that young kids love to sing and do chants. We play an alphabet chant game that helps them learn letters and sounds.

It goes something like this-

A, Ally Alligator. a, a, a (a sound 3 times while patting head.)
B, Benny Beaver! b, b, b! (b sound 3 times while patting head)

And so on. Seeing and saying plus adding movement solidifies concepts in little minds!

Play based learning. What the heck is that?

Yes, we do "letter of the week" but what would you say if I told you we actually AREN'T focused on learning letters? At the preschool stage, there are much more important things they need to learn! The project pictured below is "C is for corn" but the goal of this project wasn't to teach them the letter. Let me explain--
Coloring, painting, glueing little things on a page, singing, and yes, even playing with toys-- those aren't just fun things things we do to fill the time. These activities are teaching and/or developing skills for big kid school! Glueing little kernals of corn on a big C is teaching them how to use a bottle of glue (dot, dot, not a lot!) and developing fine motor skills (picking up small things and putting them precisely on a dot of glue) which is a very important step towards holding a pencil properly and writing when the time comes. Painting helps them learn colors, but also teaches them about textures, creativity, and abstract thinking. They also learn to clean up paint (off little hands and usually the table. And sometimes chairs and the floor!) and they also get practice putting on a shirt (paint shirt!) and taking it off! All that from a simple paint on a paper project. :) Singing teaches vocabulary. Playing with blocks teaches structuring and problem solving. Dress up teaches them about community members and how to button and zip and tie. The point is, play is NEVER just play. Play IS learning.

I absolutely adore teaching this age because everything is fun and new to them and I love seeing those little lightbulb moments when they accomplish a new skill. ❀️

Scribbling! It’s not just nonsense.

⁣
⁣
In fact, it is SO important to embrace scribbling and recognize it as art and creativity! ⁣
⁣
Things caregivers can say:⁣
β€œI see you moving your hand in a circle.”⁣
β€œYou are moving you hand so fast in a circle”⁣
β€œI see you lifting you hand up and down! That makes dots!”⁣
β€œYou are holding a crayon.”⁣
⁣
Don’t stifle the scribble. Embrace it as the most important beginning to a wonderful relationship with literacy and creativity!

Let them be little

Hi! My name is McKenzie and I own Pitter Patter Childcare. We are an in home daycare set up like a small center. We focus on learning through play, encouraging imagination, teaching kindness and respect, and letting children explore their world at their own pace. I have 18 years of experience in childcare in several different settings from being a nanny to working in large centers with 100 kids to running my own small daycare. I absolutely love running my own business. My β€œkids” become part of my family and I promise to teach, nurture, and love them each and every day.
