A new look is revealing what’s been going out with the recycling in Pocatello.

Western Recycling, the City’s recycling contractor, recently conducted a survey of what items are being placed into the City’s recycling autocarts. The study reveals that more than half of what’s being sent for recycling is mixed paper products. Meanwhile, over a third is attributed to cardboard, plastics account for close to seven percent, and aluminum and tin make up just over one percent and almost two percent respectively. Also, included in the count was how much trash and unrecyclable goods are going into the bins and it’s this number that has officials most excited.

“Only 4.1 percent of our recyclable collection is trash; that is well below national averages,” said Debbie Brady, Recycling Coordinator with the City of Pocatello. “It’s been a combination of efforts to keep contamination to a minimum, from educating the public to City employees monitoring what is in the carts. In the end though, it’s Pocatello residents who have been diligent in only putting recyclables in their autocarts and we are extremely grateful to them for that.”

Across the country, a 2013 study by the Environmental Research & Education Foundation found an average contamination rate of 16 percent at nearly 100 facilities surveyed.

According to the Western Recycling, they arrived at their numbers after sampling nearly 7,800 pounds worth of material in the autocarts.

Pocatello residents may find themselves with new electronic devices this holiday season and the City of Pocatello Sanitation Department is reminding residents to properly dispose of their e-waste the right way.

Residents are asked to take their unwanted electronics to the Sanitation Department offices, 1121 South 2nd Ave., Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Debbie Brady, Recycling Coordinator with the Sanitation Department, says it’s a little extra work but it’s worth it.

“E-waste often contains chemicals that harm people and the environment. That’s why it is important to dispose of these items properly,” said Brady. “These chemicals and compounds include lead, mercury, and cadmium just to name a few.”

A list of products that are considered e-waste is included below. If you have questions about this or any other Sanitation Department programs, call 234-6193 or visit Pocatello.us/sanitation.

Cellular and wireless phones
Keyboards

The department has scheduled this year’s special holiday pickup to begin December 26 and run through December 31. The pickup is to accommodate the overflow from the Holidays.

Residents are asked to place their extra bags and boxes in the same location as their regular garbage collection and it will be taken on their regularly scheduled collection day. The extra trash will be taken to the landfill and not recycled.

Officials are also reminding residents not to place Christmas trees out with the extra garbage. The City will again be providing drop boxes for tree disposal starting December 28, 2015. The tree boxes will be removed January 12, 2016. Drop boxes can be found at City Hall-911 N. 7th Ave., Rainey Park-900 South Arthur Ave., and near the entrance to Sister City Park on Pocatello Creek Road.
