Bengals,

We join other voices across the country in calling for justice and expressing our sadness and anger over the death of George Floyd and the numerous other acts of racial violence that have recently occurred. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd. We have a responsibility to condemn these horrific actions in the strongest terms possible. There is a great need for change in our society. Senseless acts of racism, lives lost, and brutality inflicted leave many searching for a way forward. Now, more than ever, it is critical for us to come together as a nation to reject all forms of bigotry that threaten what makes our communities great.

At Idaho State, we strive to eradicate hate, racism, and bigotry. Such ideologies are abhorrent and contemptible and do not, in any way, represent the ideals of our Bengal community. Our University values diversity and inclusion and the richness that many identities bring into our lives. More than that, at Idaho State University, we understand, respect, promote, and fight for the basic truth that EVERY person has inherent, unalienable, and equal value. We have an obligation to continue the work to ensure that our communities and our nation can uphold that truth.

Our University will always encourage respectful debate, thoughtful inquiry, and engaged citizenship. We are also equally committed to the protection of individual dignity and the free exchange of ideas. These commitments are at the core of who we are and are representative of our foundational values. Education is always central to meaningful social change. We must address the reality of racial disparity and violence nationwide.

As the leadership of Idaho State, it is our responsibility and priority to foster an inclusive environment where all Bengals feel welcomed and respected. As a community, we have the same responsibility to uphold that standard at all times. ๐Ÿงก

April is #SexualAssaultAwarenessMonth. Nearly 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men in the U.S. have experienced rape (or attempted rape) at one point in their lives and transgender students are at higher risk for sexual violence. By ending the stigma and supporting awareness programs, we can lower the number of sexual assaults that occur every year. If you, or anyone you know, is being abused you can contact ISU Public Safety at (208) 282-2911 or call ISU's Office of Equity and Inclusion at (208) 282-3964 for assistance. In case of an emergency, call 911. For more information, visit https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotline

An update from President Satterlee:

"I hope that this week of distance-based instruction has gone as smoothly as possible. We knew there would be challenges and issues to resolve, but I am so proud of how we addressed the task to move the entirety of our instruction to distance-based delivery. This University has known great times, and done great things, but I honestly believe this may be our finest hour."

Donโ€™t let social distance turn into isolation and fear. I call on each of you to be the force of love, support, and community that we need during this time. If we do that, we embody the heart of Idaho State University. I am here for you. But more than that, we are all here for each other. Let us not respond with panic and selfishness, but rather, rally around our interconnectedness and our duty to each other. Reach out to those around you.

At this time, ALL University-sponsored events and gatherings of more than 10 people have been canceled or postponed through May 15. This includes all outside events and gatherings happening at any of our campus locations.

The Universityโ€™s event team is quickly working on a plan to celebrate graduates without holding an in-person commencement ceremony on May 9. Details about the alternate celebration will be shared in the near future.
